A1 Lighting chats to Carclo Optics about their interesting history, being successful and what the future holds………..

1. What is the history of Carclo Optics? Carclo Optics was originally known as Combined Optical Industries and was founded in 1936 by Arthur Kingston - inventor of the plastic lens. It was bought by Carclo Plc in 1997 and became Carclo Technical Plastics. The LED team was created in 2003- right at the start of the use of LEDs in lighting. In 2012, it was decided to re-brand as Carclo Optics to better identify the core business. Carclo Optics boasts unrivalled expertise in optical design, development and manufacture. The in-house team provides bespoke optical, reflector and holder design alongside standard ranges. Optics are available in a large variety of configurations including single, triple, quad and extruded with a choice of finishes (such as frosted, elliptical and polished). There are a number of fixing options that include taped, glued, clipped and screwed. Optic Select is the Carclo Optics web application that allows you to search the product database using a wide range of criteria such as beam angle, optic type and full width half max. It returns the filtered results and presents comprehensive data sheets that can be viewed online or downloaded as pdfs.

2. Carclo is a well established company; what do you think is the secret of your success? Innovation, quality and the ability to listen to our customers needs are all very important factors in getting Carclo Optics to where it is today. We have in-house teams for design and development, marketing, sales and customer service. Offices and manufacturing facilities in the USA, Germany, China and India enable us to offer a personal, local service on a global scale. Exactly what makes Carclo Optics a leader in this market is complex- ultimately, it comes down to offering worldwide specialist, unparalleled design at a competitive rate.

3. What has been your biggest challenge to date? The main challenge results from operating in an ever changing dynamic market with LED technology and capabilities constantly evolving. Whilst this is clearly challenging, we are able to utilise the latest parts, equipment and software- resulting in high quality, innovative and unique solutions for our customers.

4. How did you overcome it? In order to be successful in a dynamic global economy, the ability to be agile and responsive to change is more important than ever before. Investing in the right projects, delivering breakthrough products and services, discovering and fulfilling customer briefs are all key factors in ensuring Carclo Optics continue to overcome both short term and long term challenges.

5. What does the future hold for Carclo Optics? We will continue to invest in key areas of the business to enable Carclo Optics to grow further. There are a number of new products currently in the design process that will further compliment our standard optic, reflector and holder range. Custom design projects are also an important area of the business that is growing and we have now completed a number of bespoke solutions. As well as developing the UK, our USA, China and India presence remains imperative to success.
