reduce your carbon footprint. Sam Woodward, SBU Manager for Lighting Control Systems at Havells-Sylvania explains the benefits of using lighting controls in commercial buildings. “Lighting controls are extremely easy to use and can bring vast energy savings to buildings. In the commercial sector, lighting equates to 43% of the total electrical consumption of a building, so any energy savings we can offer this sector will be significant. In shared spaces, such as corridors, meeting venues and hotel rooms, constant illumination accounts for a high percentage of wasted energy. We’ve found that through installing absence/presence detectors alone, we can cut energy costs by up to 60%.” An Academy in Northampton has


recently saved 138 tonnes of CO2 with lighting upgrade and presence detectors. Malcolm Arnold Academy has undertaken an intelligent lighting installation of LED and T5 lamps, controlled by presence detectors from Steinel (UK) Ltd.


Intelligent lighting control was considered a crucial part of the project. Lights throughout the academy tended to be switched on very early every day and not switched off until late at night. Steinel Presence Control PRO IR Quattro and Presence Control PRO Dual HF passive infra-red (PIR) sensors now control when the lights are switched on and off. This means that the new lighting has become automatic – not requiring


any action by staff or students. The whole project which includes Steinel presence detectors, plus T5 and LED lighting, is producing energy savings of 263,946 kWh every year. This equates to a financial saving of £34,313 a year, and an annual carbon reduction of 138 tonnes of CO2. Another great example of an energy saving project is The University of Warwick who enlisted the help of Ex-Or and Holophane Europe Ltd to reduce its annual lighting energy bill for one of its multi-storey car parks by £13,000 following the installation of LED luminaires coupled with lighting controls. Ex-Or controls have also been fitted to its three other multi-storey car parks on the campus, meaning the University is on course to make energy cost savings of more than £50,000 per year.


In addition to the cost savings, the University says the car parks are now safer and more secure places as a result of the lighting installations. "We knew there had to be potential for a massive saving in energy use if we could cut out the unnecessary use of lighting," said Gary Price (I Eng. MIET), Electrical Services Design Engineer in the University of Warwick Estates Office. "The solution we designed with Ex-Or and Holophane Europe Ltd not only achieved the savings, but also allowed us to improve the quality of the lighting, and to create a safer and more secure environment in our multi-storey car parks."
