Sheffield Croquet Club is being launched at Sheffield Transport Sports Club at the start of April, thanks to a group of six founder members.

Hoping to attract younger people to the sport, the club has its own mallets for members to use and is able to offer coaching to beginners.

Founder member Adrian Simmerson, of Dore, said: “It can be played by all ages and and men and women can play on equal terms.

“Croquet offers something different. It is a fresh air sport that does not require extreme fitness.

“Playing croquet provides opportunities for meeting people and, at the same time, can be as competitive as you want it to be.”

With nowhere for younger people to play croquet in the area at the moment, the group aims to make the sport accessible to everyone by offering the chance to play, more or less, whenever you want; daytime, evenings or at weekends.

Added Caroline Johnson, manager at the sports club: “I didn’t know anything about croquet until I met these guys. They are so enthusiastic and want everybody to get playing.

“They got me hitting a few balls on the lawn and, with a bit of expert tuition, I even managed to get them to go through a couple of hoops.”

• The sport can be traced back to a set of rules registered by Isaac Spratt in November, 1856, with the Stationers' Company in London. In 1868, the first croquet allcomers' meeting was held at Moreton-in-the- Marsh, Gloucestershire, and in the same year the All England Croquet Club was formed at Wimbledon, London.
