ORN and bred in Woodseats, this September Chris Allen will be travelling to the heart of Africa to raise money for research into Melanoma. Part of team which will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, to reach £1million for charity Elise for Life, Chris has a special reason for supporting this good cause. Now living in Coal Aston, his wife, Esther, has been fighting Stage 4 Melanoma cancer for the last seven years. Setting off on Wednesday, September 4th, the 12-day expedition will see the group climb 5,895 metres up the highest free-standing mountain in the world. A former pupil of Abbey Lane and Meadowhead schools, Chris is now in training for the challenge and has been working on getting his fitness levels up with regular runs; even while it was snowing. Elise for Life is a charity which aims to raise £1million for the Christie Hospital in Manchester, which will be split equally between Melanoma research and clinical trials. Named after a lady who was treated at the hospital, but is sadly no longer with us, the total so far stands at more than £615,000, with this expedition hoping to raise the final amount. A Charity Race Night is being held at The Big Tree pub,
Woodseats, on Thursday, March 7th, to raise funds. As well as comedy races, entertainment and a raffle ‘race-goers’ can enjoy a supper of pie and peas or chilli and chips. For tickets - £5 - contact the pub on 0114 274 9531
“I’m trekking Kilimanjaro for the Christie because this charity gives my family hope,” said Chris.

“I just want to say a big thank you to all the local businesses who have supported me and donated raffle prizes.” Chris added that a special thanks must go to Jo Broughton, who works at the Dronfield branch of Sainsbury’s and has been a huge help and support. A charity bag pack will be taking place at Sainsbury’s, in Dronfield, on Saturday, March 30th, from 9am-6pm. To support Chris, go to
