are two extremely successful events to note. Firstly the NI/NIA annual dinner held at the Grosvenor Hotel, which was a huge success, well attended, with a real buzz around the event. There was not enough time to say hello to everybody and, importantly, there were new faces of both genders. A vibrant event, representing a vibrant sector – many thanks to the diligent and hardworking organisers. Secondly, there was the three-day European Nuclear Conference held in Manchester, which I had the great pleasure of chairing. We had top quality key speakers, with a focus on new build. Overall I felt that the careers event was exceptional and that nuclear professionalism, including a hugely influential YGN, is alive and well with our European colleagues. Looking forward at planned events in the near

future, we have organised a one-day GDA seminar which has created a lot of interest throughout the nuclear community, following which we have the nuclear new build conference planned in March. Looking at the Nuclear Institute, the NSAN Collaboration Manager is now in post, and we can now move forward with the approval of industry apprentice and professional development schemes against Nuclear Institute membership criteria. This

feels like a very positive step forward. Staying with the Nuclear Institute, I am delighted to note that membership subscription renewals are 75% complete; if you find yourself in the balance of 25% please respond appropriately.

Looking at the bigger picture we find HMG

acting in a very proactive manner. They have announced the establishment of the Nuclear Industries Council, which will be an advisory body jointly chaired by Lord Hutton, Chairman of the NIA and the SoS, jointly sponsored by DECC and BIS. It is an advisory body populated by key players from right across the nuclear sector covering all aspects required to guarantee a clear and deliverable strategy for the nuclear industry going forward over the next half century. It’s a very exciting step forward and a great opportunity for our institute to exert positive influence in areas such as education and training and enhancing nuclear professionalism. The snow and ice has gone, at least for the

moment – let’s look forward to a busy and progressive Spring.
