nuclearfuture@barkerbrooks.co.uk Pinkerton win for NNL
Each year the Nuclear Institute awards the prestigious Pinkerton Prize to the authors of the best paper to feature in Nuclear Future during the previous 12 months. For 2012, the Prize was awarded to the authors of a paper from the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL). NI President Norman Harrison
made the announcement at the Nuclear Institute / Nuclear Industry Association Annual Dinner in London and presented the prize to NNL’s Corporate Chief Technologist Mike Angus for the paper ‘Encapsulation Options for Decommissioning Waste’, which was jointly authored by Mike and NNL colleagues Charlie Scales and Steve Palethorpe. Collecting the award, Mike said: “I was thrilled to hear that this paper
had been selected as the best one of the year by the Nuclear Institute’s judging panel, and very proud to collect the award in front of well over a thousand industry colleagues at the Dinner. It is a recognition of the breadth of capability within NNL, since I was able to obtain input to this paper from fi ve colleagues with specifi c expertise in immobilisation topics in addition to the contributions from Steve and Charlie – a real team effort. I’m pleased that we managed to present our work on this subject in a way which they found to be both clear and interesting. “There is a lot of attention given sometimes to the new build side of our industry, but it’s important to remember that decommissioning and dealing safely with the resultant wastes is a vital aspect too. I hope this award will be a boost for all of those who work on these important topics.”
United for the States
Atkins, Merrick & Company and Nuclear Safety Associates (NSA) have announced a strategic alliance to serve North America’s nuclear market. Combining the US and UK experience of the three companies, the alliance will offer clients a comprehensive range of engineering, safety and environmental skills. In forming this alliance, the group effectively provides US nuclear
fl eet clients with a team of over 1,200 professionals with nuclear sector experience for single source delivery of projects from initial business case through licensing-permitting, engineering, and construction management of the implementation. The alliance is targeting the existing fl eet of operating reactors
together with nuclear fuel cycle facilities to offer services in support of asset management, life extensions, and regulatory compliance. In addition, the team is well placed to support the nuclear new build programme, including the Gen3+ and Small Modular Reactor markets. The combined skills of the three companies offer a single entity to plan, design and enable complex nuclear projects.
NOF Energy, the business support organisation for oil, gas, nuclear and offshore renewables, has named James Watmore, a Manufacturing Engineer at Darchem Engineering, as the winner of its New Talent Award 2012. James, 24, collected the prestigious accolade, which was
supported by the Department of Energy & Climate Change, for his exemplary demonstration of skill, enthusiasm and passion. The award was presented at the sell-out NOF Energy Annual
Awards Dinner, which took place at the Hardwick Hall Hotel in Sedgefi eld, County Durham, and recognises some of the energy sectors’ success stories at both company and individual level. After completing an Advanced Apprenticeship and initial 'off the job'
training as a welder/fabricator at South West Durham, James rapidly progressed to join the nuclear bid team headed by the company's managing director. During this time, he impressed his colleagues with his attention to detail and ability to embrace new challenges as the business developed new products in the energy sector. James is now a Manufacturing Engineer at Darchem Engineering, an award-winning engineering company based at Stillington, Stockton-On-Tees, and is set to continue his academic studies through higher education with an enriched knowledge of the business and a very much more ‘hands-on’ approach to engineering. James has already gained national recognition in the sector as Nuclear Apprentice of the Year from the National Skills Academy and Supply Chain Apprentice of the Year. Audrey Banner, Business & Technology Development Manager at
the Department of Energy & Climate Change, said: “James is a worthy winner of the New Talent title. The judging panel were particularly impressed with his work to promote opportunities for apprentices within the company, his regular participation at recruitment events and his new role as an Apprenticeship Ambassador.”
