The future generation of energy and nuclear engineers and knowledge workers attended a Safety Seminar at the Coleg Menai Energy Centre Llangefni and Wylfa power station on 3-4 October 2012 This event was organised through collaboration between the
YGN, Coleg Menai, Bangor University, the IMechE and Magnox, taking advantage of the new multi-million pound training facilities at the Coleg Menai campus in Llangefni and the Wylfa reactor simulator facility at the UK’s last Magnox operational reactor site at Wylfa. Delegates were able to test their communication, safety
leadership and management skills in a simulated emergency scenario while visiting Wylfa’s reactor training facility and Emergency Control Centre. Activities based at the Coleg Menai Energy Centre at Llangefni
enabled the delegates to get hands-on practical experience on the state-of-the-art human performance training rig comprising plant and equipment simulating a flow loop fluid system. The delegates prepared plant operational instructions to operate the flow loop rig safely and compliantly, enabling them to demonstrate and appreciate the ability to communicate accurately and effectively in line with health and safety regulations in a real life environment. Representing IMechE and YGN, Corhyn Parr commented: “The
variety of this course with a range of presentations, classroom and activity based exercises ensured that all delegates left with both knowledge and practical experience. It was a great way to put learning into practice. We look forward to hosting a successful similar event next year.” The two-day safety seminar hosted students, graduates and
young professionals across the nuclear sector and provided opportunity for apprentices from the local Cwmni Prentice Menai (CPM) based at Coleg Menai to get involved. The seminar included talks from experts within regulatory bodies such as the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Environment Agency, as well as from the Welsh Government emergency planning sector. Themes explored included the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) 5 barriers of safety, a review of lessons learnt from major incidents, new and existing nuclear plant
designs and the various applications of human performance tools. Jan Milburn, who represented the Nuclear Institute and Magnox
Limited at the event, said: “The seminar packed in two days of challenging and thought-provoking activities and provided a fantastic opportunity for the delegates to gain hands-on experience on the last operating Magnox reactor simulator in the UK. This not only tested their technical skills but provided an environment to test their communication and leadership skills.” Coleg Menai (as a grade one college and NSAN National Skills
Academy Nuclear quality assured provider) have developed the Llangefni energy centre provision to facilitate full time and part time courses, to include: • Triple Bar • Award for Nuclear Industry Awareness • Human Factors Training • Diploma Radiation Protection • Foundation Degree in Nuclear Engineering (Decommissioning / Power generation)
Gareth Cemlyn Jones of the IMechE North Wales Area said: “This was an excellent event providing delegates with informed lectures from industry and academia combined with hands on workshops where they were able to experience the practical aspects of putting regulatory procedures into operation whilst also recognising the human performance elements fundamental to the success of any process. We hope that the successful team effort used to bring this event to fruition can be repeated at some future date.” Glenn Williams of Coleg Menai added: “The seminar was a
tremendous success, in providing delegates with a unique safety experience, knowledge of the very latest thinking on accident planning and emergency management, system designs, quality, control, protection, and future energy development. We would like to thank all the speakers, government representatives, industry specialists, professors and commercial providers for providing delegates with their unique safety insight.”
