PADDLE CANADA HAD A BANNER YEAR IN 2012. We experienced a 20 per- cent growth in membership and a 30 per- cent growth in course participation. The membership increase can be attributed in part to a dual-membership agreement with Canoe Kayak Canada’s River Kayaking Instructor training program. That added almost 250 instructors. The Moving Water Canoe and SUP instructor membership has also grown considerably. Other successes include the first anni-

versary of Kanawa’s new home in the folds of Rapid Media magazines. We negotiated funding and marketing partnerships with Transport Canada’s Office of Boating Safety, Ontario Tourism Marketing Partner Corpo- ration, National Search and Rescue Secre- tariat, and the Canadian Canoe Foundation. On the insurance front, we solved a decade-old issue with Scouts Canada. Now they can access our courses again. We hired a part-time events manager and returned to national trade shows with a brand new booth after almost 10 years. Most of the public we talk to at these shows have never heard of Paddle Canada or CRCA; there is a ton of opportunity to educate and train paddlers. Looking ahead, we are working on a

strategic plan for the organization, launch- ing a National Paddling Week (June 16–25, 2013) in partnership with Rapid Media and the Canadian Canoe Museum, as well as two spring paddling symposiums (Saint John, NB, and Victoria, BC). Until next time, stay in tight and stay

upright.

THE FUTURE PADDLE CANADA is growing and the Board of Directors is meeting in Janu- ary to define our future. Tim Fleming will help facilitate the development of Paddle Canada’s new strategic plan to guide our future development. Many of you will be visited or contacted by board members and committee chairs to be interviewed as stakeholders for your input into the direction that Paddle Canada will take. Folks will be pleased to hear that we are working with Parks Canada to establish

national licensing standards for paddlesports operators within parks. Several of our members have revealed differing experiences and expectations guiding or teaching courses in parks. We have been asked to convene all the interests together to define national paddling standards for use by Parks Canada and other interested stakehold- ers such as municipalities in 2013. I hope you are mustering up for the coming season and reflecting on the past one.

According to the numbers, we have had a fantastic year running courses and develop- ing instructors. It has proven that the more we come together, the more we energize the paddling spirit within us. There are several symposiums planned across the coun- try. I look forward to knocking blades with you at one of them. Get out and get wet,
