Carolina Fever A

s East Chapel Hill’s Sydney Holman stepped up to the 8-meter hash for a free position, Green Hope’s Maggie

Auslander stopped her. Holman had blood on her jersey.

Never mind that they were opponents. Or that these were the North Carolina state semifi nals. Or that Auslander’s fake nails, left over from the prom, likely caused the cut. “If I was bleeding, she would have done the same thing,” Auslander said.

UNC-bound Maggie Auslander and Sydney Holman legitimize in-state talent By Justin Feil

On the sideline, North Carolina women’s lacrosse coach Jenny Levy marveled at competitiveness and camaraderie of two future Tar Heels.

“Maggie will be a brilliant defender, and Sydney will be an unbelievable attacker,” Levy said. “I hope there are eighth-graders watching and getting motivated.” The state of North Carolina has never produced two such players — Auslander and Holman are consensus top-20 recruits — in the same year.

“They’re changing the way that people feel,” Green Hope coach Abby Mead said. “Lacrosse should be a competitive, athletic sport for the best athletes.” Four East Chapel Hill seniors will continue in college next year. “It’s only going to get better,” said Holman, sister of UNC attackman Marcus Holman, a Tewaaraton candidate. “It’s awesome having NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse players come out of our school.” Green Hope also has produced college players. Auslander is by far the best. “She’s shown you can be from North Carolina and go to a top program,” said Katy O’Mara, the director of Auslander’s Carolina Fever club team.
