Indianapolis By Mark Macyk

Because of the famous 500-mile race that bears its name, Indianapolis often is called “The Racing Capital of the World.” Visitors are going to have to update their travel guides. Indianapolis has become the lacrosse hub of Middle America.

Indy first tasted lacrosse success when Butler reached the NCAA tournament in 1998, the same year the Indiana Youth Lacrosse Association (IYLA) began with four teams in the city. Butler, which cut its varsity program in 2007, still maintains a club team, but the boom came from youth programs. Today the IYLA fields three age groups of boys’ programs and a girls’ program. Many of those youths now play in high school. Statewide there are nearly 40 high school boys’ teams and 20 girls’ teams, with pockets expanding from South Bend (and Notre Dame’s perennial top-20 teams) in the north to Evansville in the south. Lucas Oil Stadium,

home of the NFL’s Colts and site of the Giants’ victory in Super Bowl XLVI, will host the NCAA men’s lacrosse quarterfinals in 2013. It is the first non-East Coast city to be a predetermined host for the tournament. Indianapolis is a crossroads city, circled by interstates. Few locales offer so many direct routes to everywhere. Depending on whom you ask it might be the last city of the Upper Midwest, the first of the Plains or the north of the South. “It’s all around us,” said Tim Clark, former president of the Indiana chapter of US Lacrosse and co-founder of the IYLA. “If you look at this region, there’s high school lacrosse in Detroit, Chicago, Columbus, Louisville and St. Louis. Our focus is not just Indianapolis; it’s the whole region. We’re close to a lot of major cities. We want people to know. We want to create a community.” The Indianapolis sports community received praise for the way it came together to stage the 2012 Super Bowl. Clark, a former player at Hobart who moved to Indianapolis to work for the NCAA, echoed that sentiment. “One thing I’ve been really impressed with is the volunteerism,” Clark said. “People will give their time for an event. They put their best foot forward.” LM
