NCAA sand volleyball gaining
momentum in second season Traditional volleyball powers UCLA, Stanford and Cal Berkeley headline 13 schools scheduled to add collegiate sand volleyball for the 2013 spring season. That means less than 10 more schools are needed for the NCAA to have 40 participating sand teams, thus making it eligible for an official championship sport. Check out the list of new teams at

Stein Metzger to lead
the Bruins on the beach UCLA announced that Stein Metzger, a former Bruin all- American, would be the school’s first sand volleyball coach. Metzger won 16 times on the AVP Tour and represented the United States in beach volleyball at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens when he teamed with Dax Holdren and placed fifth. The Bruins will begin their inaugural season in the sand this spring. (Photo: Peter Brouillet)
Kathy Gregory attended the UC Santa Barbara versus Cal Poly rivalry men’s basketball game in mid-January less than a week after resigning her post as the Gauchos’ head women’s volleyball coach. Her infectious energy had not subsided. “I am still involved, I still want the best for UCSB volleyball,” Gregory said while greeting well wishers at the basketball game. Gregory, who’s 882 victories in 38 seasons is fifth most in NCAA Division I history, will serve on a three-person committee to find her successor. She will also be closely involved as UCSB looks to start a sand volleyball program within the next two seasons. “I want to see us do the beach team right here,” she said. “It’s a natural that we have an elite sand program.” (Photo: Don Liebig)
