National Volleyball Team to the silver medal at the 2012 Olympics. He is now the head women’s volleyball coach at the University of Minnesota. One thing you’ll read in the article is how com- mitted Hugh is to continually studying the game so he is well prepared to teach his players. At USA Volleyball, we place a similar premium on volleyball education, which is why we have put much time and effort into delivering informative, affordable education programs for our members. USAV is the only entity in the country that certifi es and accredits volleyball coaches, and we take great pride in teaching proven methodologies to our large popula- tion of coaching members. We also have been training and educating indoor and beach of- fi cials, both referees and scorekeepers, since our founding in 1928, for the crucial role they have in everyone’s playing experience and helping to grow the sport.. For a fi rst-time coach in any program from club to scholastic to recreation, a good starting point is our IMPACT program, which teaches the basic knowledge needed to step onto the court and coach a volleyball team. IMPACT (Impact Mastery and Professional Application Coaching Theory) offers information on many useful topics, including the best ways to communicate with players, the benefi t of motor learning science and how to apply it, key Xs and Os, drill creation and design, coaching philosophy, sport parenting, ethical guidelines and important tips for safeguarding athletes. Our IMPACT Plus program goes one step further by providing on-court training. To make IMPACT more accessible for coaches with busy schedules, it’s offered not only on- site in each of our regions, but also live online and in an online on-demand format. That means you can take an IMPACT course whenever it’s convenient for you. Just go to USAVolleyball.org and click on the education tab, and you’ll get all the information you need. After starting with IMPACT, the next step is our Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) courses. CAP I provides more depth and details on how you can become an effective teacher of the game. Among the subjects covered: Coaching philosophy, professional ethics, motor learn- ing, drill-and-practice development, practicum in teaching the skills and drills, systems of play and the best ways to structure training for an entire season. Teaching and coaching the sitting game is also covered at select CAP I course sites. Next is CAP II, which teaches coaches how to develop a system of play specifi c to your team

and level. And fi nally, there is CAP III, a comprehensive tutorial on many of the things necessary for a good team to reach an even higher level. Conditioning, sports psychology, nutrition, goal- setting and advanced skill and systems development are all covered in CAP III. On the beach, we offer similar education in both the IMPACT and CAP formats. Like our indoor courses, the information we teach is culled from the input of expert coaches, as well as sport scientists, who have studied the game for many years. Among our contributing BCAP advi- sors for beach coaching education are Mike Dodd, Butch May, Angela Rock, Dane Selznick and Anna Collier, all of whom have been standout players and coaches at the highest levels of the game.

Along with accreditation programs and collaborative online educational programs with entities such as the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), USAV also offers many coaches the opportunity to gain experience by participating in high performance tryouts and camps, youth and junior national teams, senior national teams and World University Games. High-performance tryouts alone give literally hundreds of coaches a chance to work with members of the USAV staff to evaluate players, run drills and offer feedback. Nothing is more important to the development of players in the U.S. than the coaching they receive in the gym or on the beach. And for that very reason, nothing is more important to USA Volleyball than teaching the teachers.
