he gorilla clinging to the back of the University of Texas’ Jerritt Elliott was destined for a hard landing.
Elliott, who in his 12th year as the head coach of one of the nation’s elite programs, decompressed in style when his Longhorns captured the NCAA Division I championship with a sweep of Oregon at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 15 in front of 16,448 fans – the second largest NCAA championship match attendance.
The title was the second for the Texas program (the
fi rst came under the direction of Mick Haley in 1988), and the fi rst since Elliott took over. The memory of a heartbreaking loss in the championship match to Penn State in 2009 when the Longhorns went up 2-0 in sets as
