The Southern Electronics Show returns to FIVE, Farnborough, in February. With exhibitor numbers already well above 2012’s high watermark, the show looks set for another record-breaking year, as CIE found out
Tioga, Custom Interconnect, Bulgin, Harting, Briton EMS and Heber Electronics will be instantly recognised; some of the other new names joining for 2013 even more so. The Paragon Electronics Group exhibits at Southern Electronics for the first time, alongside Daniel Joseffson. The show also welcomes award winning designers, such as ByteSnap Design and Hothouse Design.

xhibitor numbers are close to passing the 750 mark for the first time, and with a total show area now exceeding
15,000 square meters, Southern Electronics continues to carve out a unique position within the UK electronics business. Currently the longest-running electronics show in the UK, Southern Electronics is able to appeal across all sectors of industry by virtue of the broad range of suppliers sharing its purpose-built venue next to Farnborough Airport in Hampshire. Under one roof, visitors are able to meet
representatives from just about every branch of engineering; every kind of component supplier and pretty much every conceivable type of subcontractor and service provider. This year also sees the return of its free technical seminar programme, including contributions from BAE Systems, research centres and consultants.
One of the main areas of growth for 2013 has been in the Electronics, Production, Automation and Test area of the show, accommodated in a greatly expanded Electronics Pavilion. Within this area are some big new names for 2013 – including Amphenol and Mouser

Electronics. These companies join a host of component suppliers for whom Southern Electronics is now fast becoming a key annual event; RS Components, Anglia, Anixter Component Solutions, EAO, Wurth Electronics, Finder and many others. The number of specialist component suppliers taking part has grown significantly and includes a host of names. Visitors will be able to meet hundreds of specialist firms such as Classic Components and Midas Components, EMECH part suppliers such as G. English Electronics and EMC/RFI products from companies like York EMC, Kemtron – exhibiting for the first time – and Wavetame Technologies. Some new names to look out for in 2013 include Bunting Magnetics, Croylek, Eclipse Magnetics, RJS Electronics and REO (UK). The international test and certification house TUV Rheinland will also exhibit for the first time in 2013 and is taking part in the seminar programme.
Who’s who
The number of PCB and electronics manufacturing services exhibiting reads like a Who’s Who of UK electronics. Some names, like Eurocircuits, Spirit Circuits,

Southern Electronics and the co-located Manufacturing Show is also the place to find production equipment, tools and machinery. Blakell Europlacer exhibit for the first time in 2013, joining MYDATA Automation, Blundell Production Equipment and Juki Automation Systems. In the Machinery area, visitors will be able to see heavier machinery from companies like Amada and Salvagnini being put through its paces. Around them, are literally hundreds of companies offering all manner of production aids, tools and consumables – everything from adhesive labels to warehouse doors. In short, if you can’t find it at Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2013 – you probably didn’t need it anyway! Away from the exhibits, the show’s free technical seminar programme provides the opportunity to see presentations delivered by a number of world-class experts. The programme runs in two theatres on both days, and is a complementary blend of technical and business topics covering a wide range of issues facing manufacturing businesses today. From exporting to emerging markets, to eliminating counterfeit components and designing for commercial success, the sessions genuinely deliver something for everyone. The Electronics sessions begin with a look at Exporting, Distributing and Selling Electrical Products, with Sergey Putintsev and Jon Jones from international consultants TÜV Rheinland. The legendary Bob Willis will present an unmissable presentation on Eliminating Counterfeit Components. Bob returns for a later session to look at Package on Package Design and Assembly – an increasingly important technique being employed in mobile, medical and military applications. International presents two sessions. In Continuously Improving Quality on an SMT Line, the Lean and 6-sigma Black Belt practitioner looks at how a simple 6-Sigma approach can be effective in reducing waste. His second session, Increasing
Output of Electronic Box Assembly looks at how Lean principles can be applied to a production cell to achieve positive transformation in output. Nick Wainwright, CEO of York EMC Services, examines the implications of the latest EU EMC Directive with particular reference to obligations under the Declaration of Conformity. Richard Poate of TÜV SÜD Product Service guides delegates through the requirements for CE Marking for Consumer Products and Professional Electronics. Peter Grundy of the Altus Group takes a look at the pros and cons of automation in To Automate or Not To Automate. Closing the Electronics Sessions is a fascinating look at Fusion Means Business - how UK companies can win business on new fusion energy projects, delivered by Dan Mistry from the UK Atomic Energy Agency.
In the Engineering Theatre, Tim Scurlock
from Automotive Lean Consulting will look at Lean Concepts and what they mean for the practicalities of waste elimination. Bang Creations’ Stefan Knox returns with an update to one of the biggest hits of 2012; Designing for Commercial Success and New Product Development. Sergey Putintsev from TUV Rheinland presents an invaluable insight into Selling to Emerging Markets - in particular, the BRIC countries and the Middle East. David Kilroy from Manufacturing Insights will examine Best Practice and World Class Manufacturing. Mike Harrison from ATOL Business Services will look at Supply Chain and SC21, while Ian McKay, former quality executive with BAE Military Aircraft will discuss Improving the Manufacturing Process. Paul Laidler of TÜV SÜD Product Service will deliver an Introduction to Machine Safety.
