More HD capacity for Turkey

An increase in high definition production business has led to a new truck for a specialist outside broadcast company. Philip Stevens takes a close look

AS ITS name suggests, HD Protek Production was set up as an outside broadcast company for the express purpose of bringing more high definition programming to Turkey. Formed in 2008 as part of the Saran Media group based in Istanbul, HD Protek soon became established as a leading production company specialising in all types of programming, but with a major emphasis on football.

HDP03 is the latest truck to be built by HDProtek to enhance HD availability for Turkey “Our major clients are SPORT5,

Al Jazeera, Eurosport, EBU, Mediapro and various channels in Turkey,” reports Yücel Özacar, the company’s general manager. “This season we are broadcasting Euroleague, Champions League, Europa League and CEV Volleyball Final Four for our clients. All of our work is in HD.” Özacar says that work is not

restricted to Turkey — with the company having gained clients across several European countries.

Adding to the fleet To mark its fifth anniversary of operations, the company unveiled its latest OB vehicle — HDP03. “Our new truck began its broadcast life with the Tuttur.com Cup in Antalya,” states Özacar. Although these are tough economic times, Özacar says that investing in a new vehicle made sense. “The economic situation makes visions of the future difficult, but HD Protek made

its intentions clear from the beginning. With the correct planning, we have been able to move forward enabling us to respond to our customers needs. We never want to say to any of our clients, ‘sorry, we can’t do what you ask.’ We are now producing at least 60% of live HD production in Turkey and that level of commitment requires investment.” The new vehicle, which was equipped by Teratek Electronics in Turkey, measures 15m long, 3.5m wide (with the expanding section opened) and 3.8m high. “We selected Sony HDC 3300R, and HSC300 cameras, all with Canon lenses, along with a Sony MVS-6520 vision switcher,” explains Melih Eken, HD Protek’s technical supervisor. “We have worked with Sony since we started out, and by selecting the same cameras we can easily provide backup across all three of our OB trucks.”

He says that ClearCom

communication systems were selected for the same reason — they can be interchanged between vehicles in the event of a problem. Eken goes on to say that Sony

HDW2000 is used for recording in the new vehicle. “But our system also works with Convergent Design Nano Flashes, which can record on Compact Flash memory-cards for post production.” When it came to monitors,

HD Protek opted for Hewlett Packard units supported with Harris Quad splitters with matrix support. “Although they are not particularly made for broadcasting, they are doing a good job. Our other OB vans are using Sony Broadcast monitors with Harris Predator II and QS100 splitters,”says Eken.

Sound thinking One of the most significant purchases has involved the choice of audio mixer. Here, Calrec won its first sale to a Turkish customer with the installation of an Omega console into the OB truck.
