While we are still in the world of files, LTFS is fast emerging as a secure way to store and exchange content. SGL reported that in practical tests on the stand they had brought in tapes from other vendors and read the content with no problem. According to Quantum, “the beauty of LTFS is that it is like a USB drive: you drag-and-drop your assets on any device”. iStreamPlanet was focusing


on live streaming, which it said faced three technical hurdles: live video requires expensive hardware encoders; it is a complex workflow to manage; and viewer expectations are high. It claims to have solved these issues with Aventus, a software product that is scalable up to thousands of live channels, running in virtualisation on commodity hardware. Even more ingenious in its use


of standard hardware was the nanoCDN from Broadpeak. The company rationalised that modern set-top boxes and home gateways are servers in themselves, so why not use them as a massive cloud content delivery network. Given the way that telcos are suffering from media traffic clogging up the networks, it is a neat way to ease the load and offer CDN services direct, allowing them to compete on price.


Last, but absolutely not least,


a really exciting glimpse of the future from Axon, pointing to “the end of SDI”. Using the emerging IEEE AVB (audio video bridging) standard, video can now be moved over an IP fabric, with timing accurate to less than the SDI jitter specification. The Axon demonstration was set up for a uniform 2ms latency, which allows for complex switching. So no more specialist routers: just use an AVB compatible ethernet switch. A 48 port AVB- ready 10Gb ethernet switch is currently around $15k but that price will tumble. As Axon’s Jan Eveleens pointed out to me, the worldwide market for ethernet switches is 20 billion a year, so R&D is readily available and commoditisation is fast. Terabit ethernet is on the horizon. Axon promises its Synapse range will be completely AVB compatible by next NAB. Audio vendors already offer AVB products, and you can be sure that other video companies will follow Axon’s lead. Who needs the glamour of


4K when there are two seismic shifts in infrastructure: Axon showing the end of SDI and Quantel questioning if replacing it with the file metaphor is the right way to go. There is plenty of excitement left in the underlying technology.


IMT and Dejero THE DEJERO + Nucomm Connect Live transmitter is a camera-mounted bonded cellular and microwave system for electronic newsgathering (ENG), a combination of Integrated Microwave Technologies (IMT)’s coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (COFDM) technology and Dejero’s adaptive bitrate cellular bonding technologies and portal management system. is manufactured by IMT. “Our effort is basically on the hardware,” said IMT vice president of operations Todd Hansen. “There are eight antennas designed into the housing for bonded cellular, four different cellular providers, four modems. There’s also built-in Wi-Fi, so we can bond all those connections together and use them all at the same time.” For day-to-day news coverage, users can employ the bonded 3G/4G links to transport live HD video back to the station. The transmitter features adaptive bitrate and bonding technologies to compensate for


changing network conditions by adjusting frame rate, resolution, encoding rates, and streaming parameters. This enables the system to bond up to four cellular 3G or 4G LTE networks, as well as any combination of Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Ka-band satellite to provide maximum throughput for video transmissions.
