SEA Aquarium at Marine Life Park – the world’s largest oceanarium

It’s two years since

Singapore launched its first ‘integrated resorts’, bringing legalised casinos to this corner of Southeast Asia for the very first time – and with them a number of other world-class leisure destinations. Known as a city/country that doesn’t stand still, and one that places a large emphasis on tourism, several other attractions have opened within the last 12 months, and two more are about to come on tap. The 49-hectare development comprises the Universal Studios Singapore theme park, FestiveWalk entertainment district, Maritime Experiential Museum, recently- opened Marine Life Park, several live entertainment spectaculars, six hotels, a spa, convention centre, shopping, dining and of course a casino, revenues from which help Genting to bankroll the other development.

and infinity pool, the lotus-leaf-shaped ArtScience Museum, upscale shopping and dining, a nightly multimedia spectacular. Marina Bays Sands also features a conference centre that will host this summer’s IAAPA Asian Attractions Expo. According to the Singapore Tourism Board’s Serene

Tan, the development has contributed towards an 11% uplift in visitors to the wider the Marina Bay area since it opened two summers ago. Attendance to Singapore attractions in general was up by 7.3% over the last year to a combined 50 million. A second international cruise terminal will open soon so that the world’s largest ships can dock in the city, bringing thousands more visitors with them. Tan anticipates further growth, in spite of competition from new attractions immediately over the border in Iskandar (Malaysia) and some European travellers now choosing to break long haul journeys in the Middle East rather than Southeast Asia. “Our guests are coming predominantly from Asia,” she says, “so there are still a lot of travellers transiting
