MANUFACTURER UPDATE Vekoma

S&S Worldwide has several projects scheduled to open in 2013. The new Happy Valley Tianjin park in China will open a four-seat El Loco coaster (as pictured) in late May. Another Chinese park, Fuzhou Happy World in Fujian will open a 16-seat combo tower in early May, while a launch coaster is destined for Shandong Bingsheng Sunwu Culture Park. The new Sochi Park in Russia will get a 20-seat combo tower in late June. A second El Loco coaster is also destined for the United States, opening at Las Vegas’ Circus Circus casino/resort in November. A Junior Swing ride displayed in the outdoor exhibit area at IAAPA Attractions Expo is now destined for a site in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Chance Rides

Chance has secured two orders for the R-80 Giant Wheel it is marketing in association with Bussink Design. Versions of the 250ft-tall (76m) diameter attraction will go to a park in Pueblo, Mexico, and an undisclosed US location. Meanwhile a 185ft (57m) R-60 wheel will soon rise as a standalone attraction in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Described as a “Trabant on steroids” with outward facing seats (pictured) the first Freestyle, a portable model, has been sold to US carnival operator Ray Cammack Shows for spring delivery. Meanwhile a Chance Big Dipper family coaster is being prepared for Wildlife World and Aquarium, Litchfield Park, Arizona. The custom-designed layout will be 35ft (11m) tall and include 800ft (244m) of track travelling through an animal exhibit. Chance will also deliver a CP Huntington train with diesel engine to the same venue, while Beech Bend Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky, will receive a Revolution 20 (Afterburner).

Vekoma Rides Manufacturing has several new coasters scheduled to open in 2013. Opening any day now, Splash Party at Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates is a suspended coaster with added water interaction. A custom designed Motorbike Launch Coaster will open at the Great Mall of China near Beijing. As well as the 395-metre-long ride already confirmed for Orlando’s Fun Spot America, a second Suspended Family Coaster (as pictured) will open at a park to be confirmed. Other projects are ongoing.

Preston & Barbieri

The Splash Battle continues to be a steady seller for Italian manufacturer Preston & Barbieri. Despite the many rival interactive water rides now on the market, P&B has secured three new orders for 2012, all in Europe. Developed in partnership with 3DBA, Splash Battle is available in a number of different themes and configurations. Pictured here is a Pirate-themed version delivered this summer to Zoomarine near Rome. Together with Alterface, P&B will supply a dark ride to a former Soviet country, set for delivery late February. The ride will feature spinning cars and a variety of two- dimensional CGI scenes. Operated by the Future Kid, the Casper family entertainment centre (FEC) in Kuwait is in line for a mini coaster and monorail. An outdoor Middle East park will be home to both a 15-metre- diameter sea-themed carousel and family coaster. As part of its Rabbit Land expansion, Liseberg in Gothenburg, Sweden, will take delivery of a fleet of custom-themed bumper cars, while an indoor park in the Netherlands is set for a junior coaster. Meanwhile Preston & Barbieri is one of a handful of Italian manufacturers signed up to supply rides to the new by Dream Park in development near Mumbai, India. P&B’s contribution will comprise a Splash Battle, interactive tower, flying elephants and a 12- metre carousel.

Mack’s Twist ‘n’ Splash

Ride manufacturers battle it out on water

There may be other “tea cups on water” about to come onto the market, but Mack Rides continues to evolve and be

enhance its Twist ‘n’

Splash interactive water ride. “Our engineers optimised the drive system,” explains chief technical Günter Burger, the ride’s inventor. This new development allows Mack to present a Twist ‘n’ Splash with three huge boats rather than smaller spinning gondolas. The massive pirate ships accommodate a lot of space for many passengers on each of the two decks equipped with water

guns. New versions of Twist ‘n’ Splash will open in 2013 at Etnaland in Sicily and La Ronde in Canada.

As announced last issue, Moser’s Rides is also having a go with a similar ride called Corsair Battle, available with one, two, three or six rings of vehicles, set in a pond of water. The first unit is already operational at Zoo Safaripark, Stuckenbrock, Germany.

Meanwhile Zamperla has just announced plans for a ride called Water Mania. The first will be a double installation at the firm’s Luna Park presentation at Coney Island in New York, opening in May. The ride will feature a pirate theme with six four-

seater spinning barrels on each of two rotating platforms, offering a total 48 passenger capacity. Each barrel will have its own motor, and riders will board from the outside of the platform without having to set foot in the water. The Mack version, on the other hand, features platforms that submerge beneath the water once the ride starts.
