SKATERS OFFER SUPPORT TO VICTIMS OF SUPERSTORM SANDY Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the East

Coast at the end of October, leaving thousands homeless and millions without power. Among those aff ected by the disaster were Team Refl ec- tions synchronized skating member Nanette Horn- er, her mother and brother, who live in Atlantic City, N.J. In the storm’s aftermath, the Team Refl ections family asked what assistance it could provide. Horner requested that all support go to the various shelters in the Atlantic City community. In one day, the team assembled enough dona-

tions to fi ll three SUVs with clothing, food, baby items, personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies. As donations continue to pour in, Horner personally trans- ports the items to shelters in her area every weekend following her team practice in Harrisburg, Pa.

TRI-STATES COUNCIL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES OFFERS OPPORTUNITY, EXPERIENCE

The Tri-States Council Championship Series, fi rst introduced in 2011, off ers

opportunities for skaters to compete in a series of competitions and earn points toward an end-of-the-year award ceremony celebrating the highest point-earners. Unlike traditional events, no registration is involved in the series. Any athlete who competes in a participating competition is automatically added to the list of partic- ipating skaters, which is posted online at www.sk8stuff .com. “I believe this event is very encouraging for the skaters,” said Sharon Brooks, a

PSA master-rated coach from Mt. Lebanon, Pa., whose daughter participated in the series. “It gives them an incentive to participate in more competitions. I appreciate how this encourages skaters of all ages and levels to keep skating, competing and setting realistic goals. Skating should be a wonderful experience with fond memo- ries to last a lifetime.” Each competition includes all of the Test Track events, as defi ned on the U.S.

Figure Skating website (usfi gureskating.org). All participating skaters will accumu- late points toward a season total in the series, preparing athletes for future Grand Prix point-earning events. The Tri-States Council (composed of various fi gure skat- ing clubs in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and western Pennsylvania) tabulates each ath- lete’s points and posts them on sk8stuff .com. At the end of each year, awards are presented to the skaters who earn the most points for the season. Last season’s inaugural series winners include Emily Brooks (SC of Mt. Leba-

non), who won the Juvenile Test Track level with 39 points; Jordan Michalak (New Edge FSC), who won the Pre-Juvenile Test Track level with 30 points; Astra Driscoll (Pavilion SC), who won the Preliminary Test Track level with 30 points; Katie Pastor (Mentor FSC), who won the Novice Test Track level with 28 points and Vicki Nolan (Farmington Hills SC), who won the Pre-Preliminary Test Track level with 24 points.
