NEXT EDITION Into Africa

We kick off our first edition of 2013 with a unique journey, courtesy of our Contributing Editor Gary Buchanan, first of all sailing to South Africa in deluxe style with Silversea Cruises and then cruising through the region on a novel river-cruise aboard the brand new Zambezi Queen. It promises to be a genuinely

fascinating and eye-opening view of this magnificent part of the world, with a thoroughly original way of seeing it from ship and boat. And that’s the start of a major world

A Festive Finale

S

o we come to our final issue of 2012 and look back on a year that has featured both highs and

lows. We’ve had some fabulous new ships, especially on the rivers of Europe and America, and more commitments for new-builds from Carnival, Holland America and newcomers Viking Ocean Cruises (an ocean-going version of the river-cruise line). And yet we have had the biggest

tragedy in cruising for many years with the sinking of Costa Concordia and its attendant loss of life, as well as breakdowns at sea with Azamara Quest and Costa Allegra and Classic International Cruises going bust. It’s something that says we must

never be complacent as an industry, but, if the lessons are learned, I honestly believe cruising will be even more remarkable as a holiday-going choice in the years to come. With that in mind, this edition is both a celebration of what’s best in our ocean (and river) going world, with some of the best things to look forward to in 2013, and beyond.

Our News pages are full of next

year’s highlights, while top writer Gary Buchanan has a fascinating preview of the forthcoming Royal Princess of Princess Cruises. We also welcome aboard Stewart Chiron, otherwise known as The Cruise Guy, who takes

4 WORLD OF CRUISING I Winter 2012-13

over the former Aft View column with an insider’s look at key areas of this fascinating business. Destination-wise, we have a fabulous array of possibilities, from Hawaii, Bangkok and the South Pacific to Croatia and Scotland (home of unique two-ship operation The Majestic Line). We feature SeaDream Yacht Club and Norwegian Cruise Line, the Assam Bengal Navigation Company in India and the P&O Heritage Collection back home in dear old Blighty. For seasonal fare, we highlight Christmas cruising, and there’s our usual line-up of features and favourites, from the essential World of Spas to Captain Greybeard, the Letters pages and a wonderful Passenger Perspective. Plus our annual Cruise Planner is included, now up to 12 pages and packed full of essential info for your cruise choice.

So, as we look back on 2012, it’s fair

to say it hasn’t been the best of times, but it certainly hasn’t been the worst, either. And, as I wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year, I’m sure there are only good things ahead. All aboard, now…!

adventure in the pages of your favourite cruise publication as we go ‘around the horn’ of South America; into the Sea of Cortes; on the Road to Mandalay in Burma; along the Dutch waterways in a luxury hotel barge; and off to marvelous Malta for a look at this tiny – but significant – island at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. We also have a wonderful voyage on the Mississippi in the company of American Cruise Lines and their fabulous new riverboat the Queen of the Mississippi, with plenty of echoes of Mark Twain along this famous waterway. For cruise lines, we feature Star

Clippers and European Waterways, Holland America and Norwegian Cruise Line, and there’s our usual array of columnists, pundits and other cruise experts. It is yet another reason to stick with us and enjoy the vast array of choice that constitutes the wide…World of Cruising.
