NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING BOOK The concept of square foot has

been around for many years. It was developed by Mel Bartholomew in the late 70’s, but seems to be resurging due to the economy and the smaller size lots we are build- ing our homes on. The system is based on using a very organic mix of soil that is placed in raised beds. The rich organic soil and availabil- ity of nutrients from the compost used in the making of the beds gives rise to accelerated growth. This concept also allows you to multiple crop the garden because

many vegetables mature faster with this system. We are offering the book written by Mel. If you have limited space and would like to try to get some fresh vegetables, please try this method of growing them. Although this method is great for vegetables, it can also be used for a really nice flower display of geraniums, petunias, impatiens and many of the new vegetative annuals. The square foot garden can also be placed on legs so it can be used by gardeners that have a problem getting down on the ground to garden. Many schools and com- munity gardens are now using this technology to promote healthy eating.

Grafted Seedling Grafted - One Plant INTRODUCING GRAFTED VEGETABLE PLANTS

New this season, Vermont Bean Seed Co. is offering Mighty Mato Grafted Tomatoes and Mighty Veggies Grafted Peppers and Grafted Eggplant starts. Grafted vegetables seedlings are created when the top part of a desired variety (the scion) is attached to a vigorous, disease-resistant solanum rootstock. Only recently available to home gardeners in the U. S. these super productive, super healthy plants go above and beyond the call of duty to bring earlier, bigger, and better har- vests to gardeners everywhere!

Compared to starting vegetables from seed, growing grafted vegetable plants gives you more bang for your gardening buck, especially if your gar- dening area is limited. By grafting favorite heirloom and conven- tional tomatoes onto special solanum rootstocks, good varieties become super varieties. They are more vigorous, with better disease resistance to most diseases, pests (including nematodes) and environmental stresses (like heat, drought, or poor soils). These advantages mean grafted plants can be grown with less frequent rotation and fewer fertilizers or pesticides. They also have an extended harvest season, with yields up to 3 to 4 times as large as those of non-grafted tomatoes. Much-loved heirloom varieties like Brandy- wine, with late maturity dates and less disease resistance, benefit most from grafting. The pictures above are almost too good to be believed, but they were not doctored in any way.

In Europe and Asia where land is more intensively cultivated, commer- cial growers are shifting production almost totally to grafted plants. Grafting has been found to improve plant health and yield not only for tomatoes but for peppers and eggplant, and other vegetables. On page 27, you’ll see the varieties and descriptions of grafted veggies that Vermont Bean is offering for the first time. Try growing a few of these amazing vegetables and enjoy the beautiful, wholesome, and abundant harvests this season! Each grafted vegetable will be shipped with special transplanting and growing instructions, so you get the most out of these extraordinary plants!
