Products & applications Materials handling & conveying Warehouse and conveyor expansion for babycare specialist

SSI Schaefer has completed an installation of thousands of addi- tional pallet positions and pickfaces for cartons and small items for Kiddicare, which is now owned by Morrisons. The project was an extension to a pallet racking bulk store area and multi-level picking module with an integrated conveyor system which it completed for the compay in 2008 at its then 160,000ft2 warehouse in Peterborough. The extension increases the size of the warehouse footprint by 3180m². The Kiddicare warehouse, which stores a high value of stock ready for despatch, currently supports a predominantly online business; however there are plans to open 10 additional retail outlets across the UK which will be replenished with goods from a new central distribu- tion centre in Daventry.

Now comprising wide aisle, double-deep adjustable pallet rack- ing, a substantial area of the original racking was removed, relocat- ed and reassembled to accommodate a new three-tier rack-sup- ported pick tower linked to the existing pick tower by high level

bridge walkways to enable operator movement between the two areas. The top floor of the three-tier pick tower consists of shelving dedicated to the storage of small items; pallets are stored below, on the ground and on the two remaining levels. Mesh decking is installed above the pallet locations on these two levels to provide additional carton storage.

A separate conveyor system now takes complete and partly-picked

orders in totes away from the small items picking area before merg- ing with the existing conveyor system, routed via existing picking zones, to arrive in the packing area. A new heavy duty spiral chute to enable fast track distribution around the warehouse was also installed. To minimise disruption to daily operations, SSI Schaefer metic- ulously planned the project to ensure Kiddicare remained fully oper- ational throughout the entire period of installation. A new fleet of 11 bespoke-built forklift trailers are being put into operation by Barloworld Handling and its logistics provider Canute Haulage. Each trailer is designed to offer flexible materials handling equip- ment delivery service for customers nationwide. Operating with brand new Scania 6x2 mid-steer tractor units, the tri-axle step frame trailers feature curtainside bodywork with sliding roofs and have been built by Hampshire-based Andover Trailers. The order includes nine 13.6m trailers and two 10.9m trailers, with the shorter units designed for making deliveries within London and the south east. The new fleet represents investment of more than £1.2 million by Canute Haulage, with each trailer featuring a Barloworld Handling livery. Michael French, group fleet engineer at Canute Group, says: “Every feature we’ve incorporated into these trailers has been selected to combine efficient deliveries for Barloworld with a swift and profes-

Pallet perfection Re-useable pallets and dollies can cre- ate efficiencies in the transportation and accessibility of products for manu- facturers, according to Linpac Allibert. Commercial director Simon Knights, says: “With a small footprint of 800mm x 600mm, the Universal Pallet and Dolly suit any application where speed is essential and space is at a premium. They are used in manufacturing to transport products, parts and compo- nents from suppliers to the warehouse or factory floor without double handling. “This allows manufacturers to pick straight from the dollies or pallets with- out decanting parts first. The dollies allow parts to be easily and quickly moved to different locations, for example from warehouses to factories.” Manufactured from polypropylene, the

robust Universal Dolly safely handles loads of up to 500kg, while the Universal Pallet can stack two high carrying 500kg. Linpac Allibert T: 0845 850 2333 linpacallibert.co.uk Enter 363

The full height and full width power-toe ramps ensure a shallow load- ing angle, meaning we can accommodate even the lowest ground clearance warehouse equipment, whilst the sliding roof enables us to transport high- mast machines.” Andover Trailers T: 01264 358 944 www.andovertrailers.co.uk

A Block-buster Bulk Bag Conditioner developed by Flexicon is designed to loosen material that has solidified during storage or ship- ment, enabling bulk bag unloaders to discharge more easily and fully through bag spouts.

The new conditioner is suitable for bulk bags containing hygro- scopic chemicals, certain spice blends, heat-sensitive products, and other materials prone to solidifying to the point at which pneumati- cally-actuated flow promotion accessories integral to bulk bag dis- chargers are inefficient or completely ineffective.

The new Bulk Bag Conditioner incor- porates a cantilevered I-beam with motorised hoist and trolley allowing the loading and unloading of bulk bags without the use of a forklift. After low- ering a bag into the conditioner frame, two hydraulic rams fitted with con- toured plates press opposing sides of the bulk bag to loosen the material. The Flexicon design also enables a bag to be raised and lowered using the hoist and rotated manually for conditioning at any height on all sides. Flexicon

using forklifts A LiftWeigh forklift weighing system supplied to leading forklift truck manu- facturer Linde Material Handling by Weightron Bilanciai is playing an important, role for brake component manufacturer, EBC Brakes at its new headquarters in Northampton. All manufactured items are weighed during the packaging process before being loaded for delivery. This ensures no individual pallets are ‘over’ or ‘under’ weight and that collection vehi- cles are not overloaded. The Liftweigh weighing system has a working capac- ity of 2,500 kg with 1kg resolution and is fitted to EBC’s ‘E’ series Linde coun- terbalance truck. A Weightron Bilanciai EV22 weight indicator mounted in the cab displays and records the weight. LiftWeigh consists of two weigh assemblies, which fit side by side directly on standard forklift carriages - without the need for any mechanical alterations to the forklift itself whatso- ever. The forks then simply hook onto the weighing units and robust, fully protected cable assemblies are con- nected via a junction box to the onboard weight indicator.

EBC’s Simon O’Brien says: “The ability to weigh pallets directly from the forklift has important operational and safety advantages.”

Linde’s David Adams says: “LiftWeigh is the simplest, most effective, retrofit forklift weighing system we have seen.” Weightron
