Products Tools & tooling New cutting tools offer high speed machining with edge toughness

TaeguTec UK has launched its new Gold Rush series of cutting tools, presented at the Birmingham ICC to over 200 customers and distributors by IMC Group President and CEO Jacob Harpaz.

Harpaz says: “With industry demanding the capability to machine at high speeds with cutting tools that demon- strate a high level of edge toughness, our R&D teams have worked hard to deliver a range of products that offer high speed machining with excellent edge toughness. The result is the new Gold Rush range. We are now setting 45HRc as the minimum hardness level that all our cutting tools should be capable of machining at.” The result with the new Gold Rush Series is a range of

inserts that are finished to a polished standard and then given their unique 'Gold' coating for enhanced perfor- mance. The new coating that is available as a CVD or PVD option now delivers a smooth surface that improves chip

flow whilst also improving the strength of the inserts. For turning applications the TaeguTec Gold Rush series now introduces the ceramic and SiN SC10 and AS10 grades for cast iron machining. TaeguTec has also launched its new 'Black Rush' series of CVD coated inserts. The new TT7005 and TT7015 have

For general steel machining Harpaz introduced the new CVD coated TT8115, TT8125 and TT8135 that have been developed for general machining, continuous and interrupted machining respectively. This range is compli- mented by the TT9215, TT9225 and TT9235 CVD coated inserts for stainless steel and super alloy applications. More specific to stainless steel is the new TT5080 and TT9080 grades that are PVD coated. With regards to milling, Harpaz introduced the new MillRush, Mill2Rush, Chase2Mill, Fineball and TopDrill Series, whilst more specific applications such as thread- ing, boring and grooving have been extended with the launch of the new TopMini and TopMicro ranges. Addressing the challenges of machining hard materials, groov- ing tools in the new VersaCut range from Mapal combine stability, thanks to their insert clamping system, with versatility – just one type of tool holder is all that’s needed to accommodate inserts for all standard grooving and turning applications. VersaCut tools use long-life inserts that are retained in the tool holder by a clamping jaw that presses them securely into a prismatic connection. Because of the large clamping force used, this arrangement provides the sta- bility needed for precision

New end mills for aluminium

ITC has launched its new 2172 Cyber Series ball nosed end mills for aluminium. ITC has worked closely with manufacturers that machine considerable quantities of aluminium to bring the new innovation to market.

Manufactured from ultra wear resistant micro grain carbide, the 2172 ball nosed series offers high performance machining on aluminium and non-ferrous materials. The 2172 Series is said to provide the end user with a multitude of machin- ing options for specialised applications. Simultaneously, the radius further enhances tool life by preventing cutter chipping and breakages which can be common when machining at high speeds and feeds.

machining, but the design of the clamp also allows the inserts to be changed easily and quickly. The clamping jaw is recessed into the tool holder to ensure unimpeded chip flow and to pro- tect the jaw against wear. Because of the special geometry of the

inserts, the risk of damage to the tool holder should the insert frac- ture is virtually eliminated. PcBN inserts for the VersaCut range are available in four stan- dard types to suit all common machining applications. Mapal can also supply PCD-tipped inserts and custom-designed inserts for special requirements. All inserts have the same con- nection shape and size, which means that only one type of tool holder is needed for grooving depths up to 5mm and grooving widths from 1.2mm to6 mm. Mapal

Tooling firm taps into new market

As part of its appointment to dis- tribute Widia cutting tools, ITC is offering the Widia range of GTD taps and in particular the best selling GX series. The GX Series of high precision solid carbide taps are known for their ability to run at speeds up to four times faster than conventional high speed steel taps.

The GX Series is suitable for through and blind holes in steel, cast iron and non-ferrous materi- als and is available with through coolant to improve swarf evacua- tion and performance. The taps have been developed for use on CNC machine tools with syn- chronous or rigid tapping control and precision toolholders. With these parameters the solid car- bide taps and forming taps expect to deliver high perfor- mance in this range of materials. The GX Series runs at higher

speeds and offers tool life that is extended by up to four times, reducing tooling costs and improving productivity for the end user. Such results are possi- ble due to an optimal chamfer design working in harmony with a flute shape that has been cre- ated to optimise chip evacuation.

Sliding head turning

reaches new level With the arrival of the Delta 38/5 machine, Tornos has slightly increased the range of parts that can be produced through traditional sliding head bar turning. With a capacity of 38mm, this turning machine with its five linear axes and two C-axes can hold up to 31 tools. The turning machine is said to be ahead of competitor machines in both diameter and power. Weighing 4.6 tonnes with a main spindle generating a maximum power of 11kW and a torque of 70Nm, combined with 20x20 cross section turning tools, this is a high-performance machine that can remove large quantities of swarf. For producing short parts with a length up to 2.5 times the diameter to a maximum length of 100mm, Tornos recommends the Delta 38/5BL. Operating without a guide bush, this machine can be used to machine bars with a lower level of finish than is obtained on a version with a guide bush. This can result in considerable savings on the cost of materials. Not only is the loaded material less expensive; the drop length is also reduced as much as possible. “For short parts, the BL machine is a must. The diametric tolerance of the raw bar becomes less critical and the drop length is reduced to its simplest form; this helps to bring down material costs,” explains Tornos marketing manager Brice Renggli.
