in a 2011 real estate listing as “rivaling, if not surpassing, all other parcels in the grandeur of its old stone walls, rocky pastures, proximity to the river and other points of interest.” European settlement of this farm near the mouth of the Mystic River dates to the mid-17th cen- tury. Two hundred years later, the prominent Greenman Family lived here, within an easy walk of their shipyard on the river—land now occupied by Mystic Seaport, one of New England’s prime tourist draws in a town that also features an aquarium, a living history village, an arts center, and other popular attractions. near Coogan Farm and has long sought to acquire the farm for its habitat, history, lovely landscape, and views. Protecting the land would create a 300-acre expanse of continuous open space in the heart of Mystic’s popu- lar attractions, so when the farm was listed for sale at a multimillion-dollar price, the nature center came to The Trust for Public Land for help. In April, TPL announced that it had obtained a one-year option to acquire the historic property. Then the two organizations launched a fundraising campaign that, if successful, will keep boots walking these old pastures for years to come.
