Happy schoolchildren show off the garden in their new com- munity playground in Borough Park, Brooklyn. Opened in May, the playground is the 54th New York City playground designed by students and the community with The Trust for Public Land’s help. The program is in partnership with the city and Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYC 2030 initiative to transform neglected spaces—often asphalt school- yards—into vibrant playgrounds and community parks. The goal is to provide every child in the city with a safe outdoor play space within a ten-minute walk of home. In addition to the garden, the new playground includes a running track, play equipment, climbing boulder, playhouse, gazebo, and benches, along with such green infrastructure elements as a green roof on the storage shed, a rain garden, rain barrels, and an arti- ficial turf field with a gravel base, all intended to capture and slow rainwater to help prevent overflow from polluting the city’s water- ways.
