sick. I would take groups of fellow trainmen for rides on the South Shore Line. Our sub- urban cars were relatively new, but some- times some of my fellows would complain about their condition. I would tell them if they wanted to see antiques that went 90 miles per hour I’d show them something. Then we’d make a trip to Michigan City or South Bend on our layovers. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing, and I became more and more homesick. I remember once after one of our trips on the South Shore I trimmed my uniform cap up like a South Shore cap. No one noticed but I was happy. In fact when I got the job of designing the Metra trainman’s uniform I trimmed the caps exactly the same way. When you see one you now know why it has the two rows of yellow bands. The Milwaukee went into bankruptcy and then reorganization. In 1982 we had a buy- out of all employees that wanted to partici- pate. The Milwaukee bet me $20,000 my job wouldn’t be there next month. I took them up on it. I spent the next two years as an in- ternationally unknown artist. It was September 1983 when the South Shore Line was in a position to retire the re- maining fleet of old cars. I was there for the several round trips from South Bend to Chicago. I was the last passenger to ever step off one of the cars when we arrived at the Shops that evening. Then opportunity struck. I found the South Shore hadn’t had a new complete printed timetable in many years. I was in contact with the director of public affairs for the Northern Indiana Com- muter Transportation District (NICTD), the public agency that now was responsible for such things for the railroad’s passenger op-

I
set
out
to make a new,
old
timetable complete with a snappy illustra- tion of a new car on the cover with yours tru- ly as the engineman in car 16. I painstaking- ly cut apart hundreds of photostatted (before computer scan) copies of old timeta- bles and pasted times together to make new schedules. I found an old typesetter that had the same fonts as were used on old timeta- bles. It was a hit and I got on the scoreboard. This was in the summer of 1984. It turned out that the C&O (by then “Chessie Sys- tem”) was selling the South Shore Line to any reasonable party (I’ll have more to say in later episodes). Late in August 1984, it was announced that The Venango River Cor- poration bought the South Shore Line. Their management was familiar with my work. They had seen the poster, “Faithful Service,” that I had done to honor the retirement of the orange cars. They liked my timetable concepts. Their new president came to my studio and I was prepared. He explained how there was a ticket counterfeiting prob- lem and I gave him a quick, easy fix for it. He hired me on the spot. I went on to have a one man exhibition of my work in New York before returning to the South Shore’s offices to settle in. Venango River didn’t do too well, but I didn’t care too much for office life. My first wife was strick- en with multiple sclerosis and had to return home to spend her final years under family care. I went back to being an artist. But there was one more chapter. NICTD was now in a position to assume ownership and direct control of the railroad. They needed more trainmen. I just couldn’t help myself and in I went. My first trip was
