and Toledo. There were 21 trips on a daily basis. Buses left Detroit at 40 minutes after the hour and arrived in Toledo at a quarter after the third hour. For example, the 7:40 a.m. bus from Detroit was scheduled to ar- rive in Toledo at 10:15 a.m. while the electric cars between Detroit and Toledo had trips scheduled to leave Detroit at 8:15 a.m. and arrive at Toledo at 10:25 a.m. For the trip to Cleveland, the 8:15 a.m. departure from De- troit was scheduled into Cleveland at 2:40 p.m. If the service was not terribly fast, it ap- pears to have been convenient. In these days of high gasoline prices, the service, had it re- mained, might have been attractive. I don’t know if the timetable is an original or a mod- ern copy. In any case, thank to my son for finding the timetable and bringing it to my attention.
In an interesting wrinkle, the timetable advertises “aeroplane” service: six round trips, daily except Sunday, between De- troit and Cleveland and two round trips, daily except Sunday, between Detroit and Chicago.
A Calendar of Memories
One of the best rail transit themed calen- dars is published by the East Penn Traction Club. I am particularly drawn to it because it brings back so many memories of growing up in the Philadelphia area. The 2013 calen- dar is no exception. I am partial to the pho- tograph for May 2013 because it shows the trolley stop where I boarded Red Arrow Lines Ardmore division cars for the final leg of my trip to Haverford Township Junior High and Senior High School. I would ride a Red Arrow West Chester Division car from Westgate Hills to Llanerch Office, one stop short of Llanerch Junction. Then I would walk a long city block down Park Street to Darby Road and the Ardmore Division to the Park Street trolley stop. My happy memory is that Red Arrow rail lines ran with clock- work efficiency and timeliness. Flashes On July 1, 1992, the Joint Powers board pur- chased the CALTRAIN commuter service between San Francisco and San Jose from the Southern Pacific. Over the following 20 years, Caltrain has improved the level of service, introduced the Baby Bullet trains, greatly improved access for disabled passen- gers and improved ticketing and fare collec- tion. When the California state legislature voted in favor of the high-speed rail pro- gram, it gave the green light for $600 million to be spent on improvements to Caltrain, which will be the path into San Francisco for the high-speed service. A big part of those funds will be spent on electrifying Caltrain. The electrification is expected to be in place before 2020. Voters in LOS ANGELES approved trol- leys for downtown in a special December 1 vote. A taxing district will be formed in downtown Los Angeles comprised of 397 acres of land. The tax to support the street- car will be in proportion to the square footage of the property owned. The COLUMBIA RIVER CROSSING project will replace the I-5 bridges between Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash. This is a long desired project that should go far in improving connections between the two cities. It will also allow for the construction of a light rapid transit line to link Vancouver and Portland.
The intention of SMART, the Sonoma-
Marin Area Rail Transit project, is to link Sonoma with the Larkspur Ferry Terminal. This is in Marin County to the north of San Francisco. Orders have been placed for con- struction materials. The TEX rail project has obtained a grant
from the Federal Transit Administration to carry out some preliminary work on the $758 million, 37 mile rail commuter line that will link Summer Creek southwest of Fort Worth to downtown Fort Worth, and the northeast to Grapevine and Subsequently into the Dallas-Fort Worth airport.
