ect? Here’s how Mary Schweigl explains it: “Those we are helping are valuable people who may be Down syndrome, autistic, have Aspergers, or the like. In Michigan, after these individuals turn 26 years of age they can no longer be involved in the educational system. At that point, opportunity and expo- sure for them can come to an abrupt halt, even though they are able to contribute to society in so many ways. Opening a place of employment, where they can be connected to the public in full view of the community, and develop a sense of belonging and self re- spect, is what we strive to make happen.” MacDonald adds, “The restaurant will be run by professionals. We’ve hired a General Manager and a Manager, and will hire cooks and a wait staff. But we’ve also created jobs to match the skills and aptitudes of 30 spe- cial-needs adults, all 26 or older, who will work between two and ten hours a week in support roles.”
The level of commitment is apparent whether talking to Schweigl or MacDonald. “We want special needs adults in the public eye,” says MacDonald. “Being one step up from a sheltered workshop, the restaurant model enhances their mental health, self es- teem and dignity. The emotional high creat- ed by having one’s name on a uniform and working for a paycheck cannot be overstat- ed. For some it will enable a move up to em- ployment elsewhere. In any event, it is a transformational event, creating a sense of belonging and accomplishment.” In the end, the trains and station become secondary. This is a story for the heart.
