ESOF 2012


– FIVE NOBEL LAUREATES AND 5,000 DELEGATES


ESOF 2012, the largest general sciencemeeting in Europe, takes place in the Con- vention Centre Dublin from11 to 15 July. It’s an interdisciplinary, pan-European meeting, held under the auspices of Euroscience,which aims to showcase the lat- est advances in science and technology, promote a dialogue on the role of science and technology in society and public policy, and stimulate and provoke public interest, excitement and debate about science and technology. Across the four days therewill be over 120 science, careers and science-to-busi-


ness sessions,with over 400 speakers, including 23 keynotes speakers and five Nobel Laureates. Highlights include the keynote lecture by JulesHoffmann, 2011 JointNobel Prizewinner forMedicine, at the opening ceremony on 11 July; an in- terviewwith JamesWatson on Policy Day on 13 Julywith the keynote address by MáireGeoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner forResearch, Innovation and Science; director general ofCERNRolf-DieterHeurer’s address; and also a lec- ture by Jean-Jacques Dordain, director general of the European SpaceAgency. The final science programme includes current and relevant topics across a


spectrumof disciplines. Highlights include sessions on exoplanets, planetary robots, building better athletes,water challenges for a changingworld, science and innovation in the Islamicworld and urban sustainability. The ‘Sciencewith- outBorders’ session,meanwhile,will feature speakers such asGraceNaledi Mandisa Pandor, DominiqueRistori, JohnBeddington andAlan Leshner. Other notable sessions include a symposiumon the debate on publishing and


open access featuring Philip Campbell. The ESOF 2012 programme has sessions on ‘Volcanic eruptions and the global fallout’, ‘The hunt for the Higgs at the LHC’, ‘Particle of Physics and the explosion of interest’ and ‘Responses to radical climate change’. The event is expected to bring together over 5,000 scientists, business leaders, government officialsandinternational scienceandrelatedmedia.
