Valspar anchors R&D in US
Valspar has announced a $30m expansion of its coatings research and development campus in Minneapolis in the US that will see it add more than 8,000m2
and meeting space. The Minneapolis facility is described as the anchor of Valspar’s worldwide R&D
of new laboratory
operation, which also includes a large facility at Guangzhou in China as well as three smaller facilities in its VAST network. The expansion will be com- pleted early in 2014. “Expanding our Minneapolis
R&D centre is a prime example of Valspar’s global leadership in coatings innovation and
technology,” said Gary Hendrickson, chairman and chief executive officer of Valspar. “We will devote more resources toward developing differentiated coatings technologies to address the changing needs of our customers.” ❙

Yalian pipe coating unit starts up
Yalian Steel Corporation’s new pipeline coating plant has now been fully commis- sioned at its recently constructed facility at Yangzhou in China’s Jiangsu province, where it also operates a 200,000 tonnes/ year LSAW steel pipe mill. The $8.7m coating line is
claimed to be the first in China to be equipped with a semi-automatic control system. It is configured to handle three layer PE and PP as well as FBE coatings. ❙
