A project to line the cooling system at the West Burton power station in the UK shows the appeal of CIPP in industrial installations
SPR Europe powers up its CIPP pipe lining activities
SPR (Sekisui Pipe Rehabilitation) Europe has been providing its cured in place pipe (CIPP) lining solutions for renovation of failing water or gas pipelines for more than 20 years. The company has now extended its scope of application to include electricity generators, with a range of CIPP options now available for the rehabilita- tion and protection of cooling water piping systems in power plants, and the fi rst project was competed at EDF Energy’s West Burton power station in the UK at the beginning of this year. Rehabilitation and lining of cooling water pipes in
power plants is a complex task as there is considerable variation in operation and system construction between one facility and another. Power plant pressure pipes and ducts are also subject to strict quality controls and performance requirements. SPR Europe’s Nordpipe and Tubetex CIPP liners already satisfy the strict criteria laid down for rehabilita-
tion of sensitive infrastructure. The Nordpipe system employs a glass fi bre-reinforced felt coated with PE and is used for potable water pipelines from 150mm to 1,200mm diameter; the Tubetex system is suitable for potable water and gas pipelines and uses a polyester reinforcement with a PE or Hytrel TPE coating. Both systems are cured once in place in the existing pipe. Certain precautionary and preparatory measures are
required for remedial work on power plant cooling water systems, says SPR, but the method of installation of the resin impregnated pipe liner in the existing pipe and thermal curing to form the new pipe surface is similar to rehabilitation of subterraneous infrastructure in the public sphere. EDF Energy is one of the UK’s largest electricity
generators. Its site at West Burton in Nottinghamshire is one of its largest, including a 2,000MW coal-powered power station that was commissioned in 1968 and a new
