“A City full of
Secrets!” Le Elephant!
First Impressions…
My visit to Nantes began at London’s City airport where I boarded the CityJet and within two hours I had reached my destination.
At first glance the city is like many other within France, yet I very quickly discovered it was so much more! Around every corner was a surprise, a colourful, cultural delight! Be it an abstract piece of art or a stunning castle, the city is a true sight to behold.
To begin with, the city is steeped in history. With it being on the verge of the Loire, it saw years of slave trade come through the harbours, a fact that strongly links itself with a city within our own region, Liverpool. This is not its only link to the Merseyside town but I’ll get to that shortly…
There are many ways to discover the city, be it a gentle walk meandering through the streets, a water taxi to discover some amazing restaurants that litter the shores, but in my opinion the only way to truly would be to venture upon the top of a 50 tonne mechanical elephant!!
The Great Elephant is a truly majestic sight that roams the city and has been created by Les Machines de L’ile. Les Machines de L’ile is a unique and fascinating collective that took ownership of an old shipyard to create a workshop full of creative artistry that you couldn’t believe! From the inside of the Great Elephant you shall be able to see the moving gears that power its legs whilst on board shall also be a machinist to answer all your questions about not only the city, but the projects for the company on the horizon, including a carousel like you’ve never seen before!
