As the sun rose above Somerset House, excitement trickled through the air. Once again the courtyard was transformed into the epicentre for London Fashion Week Spring / Summer 2013.
We were there to see what the coun- try’s leading designers had created and
of course what we will all be wearing in 6 months time. There is not just inspiration to be found on the runway, from maga- zine editors to celebrities, bloggers and photographers. Fashion attracts fashion and this is where the crème de la crème hang out.
On the street the key trend of the summer was evident, sports-luxe, the stylish way to give a nod to the Olympics. Letterman jackets, Baseball caps, Isabel Marant wedge trainers and bright coloured Nike’s. For winter this is a trend which will stick around however caps will be embellished, with sequins and crystals. Soft jersey jackets will be replaced by leather versions in the same style, layered up with colourful faux-fur scarves and gillets. Prints were also in abundance, the more you can clash the better.
An unlikely appearance on the runway, for those of us over the age of thirty at least, was the influence of the 90’s. The styles we shunned not so long ago now cool again. Most prevalent was the ‘Grunge’ era, remember Marc Jacobs’
This time however Grunge is a tad more glam. With Ashish sending out tracksuits, slouchy socks, Reebok Classic’s and Scrunchies, all dressed up with thousands of shimmering sequins. Henry Holland took the signature Plaid away from the Grunge essential Lumberjack shirt, blew it up and tailored it to perfection. Caroline Charles, perhaps the designer you would least expect to channel the slouchy style, took it to another level. Beanies replaced by narrow brim hats, long skirts given a fuller and more dramatic take, Rosary beads worn around the waist and just a hint of a bare mid-rift. This is Grunge for the grownups.
In total contrast the other huge trend for next season is Lady-like Chic all pretty washed out shades, lace gloves, pearl jewellery

handbags. Stripes,
sheers and crisp whites were also popular.
In between the shows we hung out backstage to check out the beauty trends. Nails were kept clean and elegant at Nicole Farhi, the designer herself stopping by for a quick Mani. Runway nail technician Sharon Ashton explained how she used matt nail varnished to create a powder effect finish at Fam Irvoll, an easy trend to try yourself. Complexions were brightened with highlighter; it was all about attaining that natural glow.
If there is one lesson to take home from LFW it is be comfortable with your look and have fun...
