Powerstax to display high efficiency power solutions
owerstax will be showcasing their most recent power conversion product
introductions, technology trends and the recently acquired high power Drake transformer rectifier product ranges at electronica 2012.
The recent Drake Power acquisition allows Powerstax to offer customers automatic transformer rectifier systems up to 500kVA and beyond. These are typically thyristor controlled with modular switch-mode technology available for smaller systems.
The markets served by Drake include marine, offshore, cathodic protection, water treatment (electrochlorination), electrochemical and plating, medical, aerospace, military equipment including frequency converters and aircraft ground support and many others. These generally bespoke power solutions are suitable for harsh
and the latest in 1U, baseplate cooled technology offering up to 500W output.
Further development of Powerstax’s high-efficiency power converters will see new developments for fuel cell power conversion for electric vehicles.

IR expands IGBT family for appliance motor drives
nternational Rectifier has expanded its family of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) with the introduction of the IRGR4045DPbF and IRGS4045DPbF. The new 600V Trench ultrafast IGBTs offer
reduces switching and conduction losses to deliver higher power density and greater efficiency at higher frequencies. Co-packaged with a diode and available in DPAK and D2Pak packages, the new IGBTs feature a nominal current of 6A and a minimum short circuit rating of ≥ 5µs
The new devices also offer low VCE(on) to reduce power dissipation and achieve higher power density, and positive VCE(on) temperature coefficient for easy paralleling. The IRGR4045DPbF and IRGS4045DPbF are suitable for a wide range of switching frequencies, optimized up to 20kHz. Offered as both die and packaged devices other key features of the IRGR4045DPbF and
improved performance and higher efficiency for appliance and light industrial motor drive applications including washers and refrigerators.
The IRGR4045DPbF and IRGS4045DPbF utilize IR’s thin wafer Field-Stop Trench technology that significantly

(marine, offshore, desert) and hazardous (Zone 1 and Zone 2) environments. The systems can be oil, air or water cooled and can be sealed up to IP65 if the environment dictates.
Continuing development of their own patented high efficiency full-brick power solutions, Powerstax will have on their booth a number of configurable rack mounted power supplies, vehicle mountable power solutions for harsh environments

High-frequency solutions filter out EMI, EMP & TEMPEST threats
A
t Electronica MPE Ltd of Liverpool is showcasing its latest ranges of higher
current EMC and EMP filters and feedthrough capacitors which protect against conducted electromagnetic interference in high-frequency applications. Whilst defence applications encompassing vehicle equipment systems, tactical shelters, C4ISTAR and communications facilities, satellite ground stations and shielded rooms constitute MPE's core business, MPE products are deployed in many other areas.
These range widely from telecommunications, data centres, control rooms and medical scanners to airport radar towers, fire safety, process control, automotive testing and mass transit.
Then, to filter out unintended
electromagnetic emanations from conducting lines which can then be reconstructed elsewhere as intelligible data, MPE supplies TEMPEST filters for vulnerable power, data, telephone and control lines. In fact MPE can combine TEMPEST, continuous wave and pulse filtering solutions in a single compact unit offering undiminished high performance over decades of life.

Kemtron exhibiting full range of shielding devices at this year’s electronica
emtron will be exhibiting their full range of gaskets and components at this year’s
electronica in Munich.
The first level of EMC shielding is PCB design however despite best efforts the enclosure will usually need some form of EMC shielding in the enclosure seams and openings such as doors, windows, ventilation, cable entry etc. It is therefore imperative that EMC for enclosure design is considered in the early stages, it is very difficult to retrofit EMC gasketing and components at a later date. Large enclosures such as 19” racks and cabinets up to shipping container sized communication cabins tend to need large gaskets to take up the tolerances that occur over long lengths such as doors. If the gasket needs to be 10mm high then the width should be no less than the height therefore the land area for the gasket to sit on is the important factor. Types of gasket suitable for these applications are conductive fabric over foam for commercial application as these are very soft and flexible but only offer electric field shielding and no
environmental seal, where magnetic shielding is required knitted wire mesh or combination gaskets are best suited and these can be incorporated with environmental dust and water seals. Beryllium copper fingers are a good option where very high performance is required such as shielded room doors but are high maintenance due to finger breakage. Smaller enclosures for
instrumentation, communication equipment etc usually requires much smaller profile gaskets and the most cost effective method of providing and EMC and dust/moisture seal is to use an electrically conductive elastomer O ring in a groove. There are many other electrically conductive flat sheet gasket types available such as oriented wires in silicone which is available in solid or sponge silicone with either monel or aluminium wires. This type of gasket is suitable for surface mounting directly to the flange and the wires provide an aggressive contact with the mating surface ensuring very low contact resistance and in turn good EMC shielding. Kemtron is an EMC component manufacturer and offer a complete range of EMC gaskets including EMC ventilation panel, shielded windows, cable glands etc.
