Eighth-brick 240 Watt DC-DC converter achieves 94.5% efficiency


Murata has launched the RBE series of fully isolated DC-DC converters. These products are designed for a broad range of applications including 12 VDC intermediate bus architectures or distributed power-based applications used in servers, wireless base-stations, data storage, telecom switches and networking equipment. The RBE-12/20-D48 model will deliver a


regulated 12V output @ 240 Watts from a nominal 48 VDC input. With an efficiency of 94.5%, most applications with forced air cooling will not require an external heat sink. For applications where there is no forced air cooling or the operating temperature range is high, an optional baseplate is available that will allow for attaching a heat sink. The RBE DC-DC converter has been designed to meet the requirements of the Distributed power Open Standards Alliance (DOSA) eighth-brick configuration measuring 58.42 x 22.86 x 10.16 mm (2.3 x 0.9 x 0.4 inches).


The standard module is a through hole mounted package, configured as an open frame converter with 4.6mm pins and negative logic.


Optional configurations include various pin lengths to eliminate secondary process for trimming pins, positive logic control, conformal coating and the baseplate for conduction cooling applications. Protection features include thermal shutdown with auto restart (hiccup), over current/short circuit protection with auto restart, and input under voltage lockout. The converter is fully isolated to 2250 VDC with a basic insulation system meeting the requirements for PoE applications and is compliant with the internationally recognized safety standards UL/EN/IEC 60950.

30V micropower buck regulator improves battery life


Semtech Corporation, a supplier of analogue and mixed-signal semiconductors, has unveiled the first device in its platform of high-efficiency micropower step-down switching regulators. The SC4530 is a 30V micropower buck regulator that provides light-load efficiency greater than 80% at 650µA output and an ultra-small, 50mm2 solution footprint. These features address the need for long battery life, small size and design simplicity in notebook PCs and set-top box applications.


“The new SC4530 provides longer standby times in both battery-powered and line-powered consumer electronics by providing designers a high efficiency power solution for light-load conditions,” said Andy Khayat, Senior Business Unit Director for Consumer Power in Semtech’s


Power Management Group. “This micropower buck regulator increases light-load efficiency up to 10 percent giving customers another means to achieve their power efficiency goals.” The SC4530 operates from a 3V to 30V supply and provides an adjustable output voltage with output current up to 300mA. The very-wide input voltage range enables the device to operate from a variety of input sources, including single- or multi-cell batteries, internal system rails and wall adapters.


A web-based design evaluation and simulation model is also available for the SC4530.

Tri-Load looks to ‘future proof’ power distribution


Havells, a specialist in low voltage switchgear, has launched Tri-Load - a new three-section MCB TPN distribution board for commercial building applications. Described as a future-proof approach to the metering requirements of Part L2 of the UK Building Regulations, Tri-Load is believed to be the only standard distribution board that separates small power circuits, lighting circuits and mechanical services loads and provides net energy values of each load type. Tri-Load is capable of independently monitoring lighting, small power and auxiliary service loads, to ensure data capture and analysis for building managers is meaningful and effective. Tri-Load is a Type B distribution board that has been designed to offer greater versatility and ensures full compliance with the latest regulations. Available in two sizes - 12 or 18 ways to allow loads to be split into logical groups - Tri- Load can also be configured as a Dual Load board to monitor power and lighting only. In this mode, the ‘split’ between the numbers of circuits available is variable and can be adapted to suit the composition required for each particular installation.


Display and communication of energy data is clear and simple with Tri-Load thanks to the pre- installed and fully wired metering installed as standard. The IP30 conforming LCD display is fully backlit and presents the key values by load type and total load, while navigation through further parameters is ultra-simple via interface buttons.

Pulsed output and Modbus RS485 comms is also fitted as standard and facilitates ease of integration with virtually any energy management system. Current Transformers (CTs) are integrated within a single-piece busbar design for higher integrity and reduction of required electrical connections and the potential hot spot failures. During installation, the rigid construction of the Tri-Load casing is maintained, even with gland plates removed and a full trunking interface kit is supplied as standard. The door is also removable to aid installation and an easy-to-align hinge design makes it simple to refit. For enhanced security a door barrel lock can be fitted for extra security.
