News Industry New exhibition for sensors and instrumentation
THE NUMBER AND VARIETY of exhibitors at this year’s Sensing Technology exhibition, which took place at the end of September, made it a useful and interesting event, with a diverse range of products and technologies available for visitors to see. Companies who attended included Bürkert Fluid Control Systems, Micro-Epsilon, Bronkhorst, Keller,
Profibus, National Instruments, Infratec Infrared, Sensor Technology, plus many more. According to the exhibitors, visitors were knowledgeable, interested and keen to discuss product features and applications with staff manning the stands; and many companies saw a mixture of both old customers and potential new ones.
The co-location of Sensing Technology with a number of other events – MM, MEMS and NANO, plus Mediplas and TCT Live – was a further benefit, with exhibitors reporting that visitors to the other shows found products of interest within Sensing Technology. The seminars, meanwhile, covered such subjects as ‘Wireless structural monitoring via the cloud’; ‘Reducing process control costs’; and ‘Three steps to Profibus success’. improve sustainability THE TECHNOLOGY Strategy Board and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council is to invest in 17 major research and development pro- jects that will develop innovative process technologies to improve sustainability in a wide range of sectors, including food and drink, chemicals, construction and aero- space. The total value of the R&D, including contributions from the participating companies, will be in excess of £14 million. Iain Gray, chief executive of the
Technology Strategy Board, said: “Innovation in sustainability is vital for the continued success and growth of the UK process industry and this research and develop- ment will lead to innovations in manufacturing that will improve economic performance, benefit the environment and have a posi- tive social impact.”
Sustainable manufacturing is critical across the process indus- tries, and there is a drive for faster, more effective product design and manufacture. The seventeen collaborative R&D projects will be led by C-Tech Innovation, Centre for Process Innovation, Dynamic Extractions, Environmental Pulp Products, GlaxoSmithKline, Imerys (UK), Imperial Chemical Industries, Industrial Microwave Systems, Johnson Matthey, Perceptive Engineering, PhosphonicS, Plant Integrity, Procter & Gamble Technical Centres, Scionix, Syrris, Unilever and Yorkshire Process Technology.

Designing a lightweight fuel efficient vehicle
ALTAIR PRODUCTDESIGN is partnering with Edison2 to assist in the design of the new Very Light Car 4.0 (VLC 4.0), the next generation version of the lightweight, fuel efficient vehicle entered in the Progressive Automotive XPRIZE in 2010. According to the company, the VLC 4.0 is an all-new vehicle that will achieve unmatched fuel economy results by retain- ing the same attributes of ultra-light weight and extremely low aerodynamic drag in a four-passenger vehicle.
Altair ProductDesign will con- duct a three-phase engineering
study targeting suspension sensi- tivity, vehicle impact strategy and structural optimisation. It will provide computer-aided engineer- ing optimisation and crash-safety engineers, multi-body dynamics engineers, subject-matter experts and senior technical specialists. They will assist the Edison2 team in executing each of the study’s three phases and accelerating the development of the prototype for the VLC 4.0.
Other work with the Edison2 team will analyse ride and han- dling, steering sensitivity and noise-vibration-harshness (NVH).

TÜV certified drive ACCORDING TO Moog, its Pitch
Servo Drive has obtained TÜV cer- tification for compliance with the guideline for the certification of wind turbines GL2010 issued by Germanischer Lloyd. This vali- dates that Moog designs achieve Performance Level D for the feathering safety function, which ensures that the most critical oper- ation of utility scale turbines meets relevant global standards. Moog has become one of the first companies to obtain this certifica- tion for AC Electric Pitch Systems. The Pitch Servo Drive is a key component in electric pitch systems that is responsible for controlling the blade angle during turbine operation and for the feathering safety function. It is classified as a safety critical com- ponent.
