FOCUS Roll Handling “At first we were concerned about the fact

that the cradles would be coming such a long distance and by ship,” says Timmermans. “We wondered how they would look when they arrived. But everything was perfect. The cradles were wrapped with stretch film and arrived in perfect condition. The time from order placement to deliver of the cradles is a consistent six to eight weeks. It is all running very smoothly.” The first duty of protective roll cradles is

to prevent any damage during shipping and handling. Nitto Europe also needs protective cradles that will not leave marks or impressions on the outer layers of the film rolls. The pallets, each with three tiers of rolls, are often stacked three high for shipping and warehousing. “We have to be careful that the bottom

rolls do not get imprinted by the cradles from the weight of the rolls above,” continues Timmermans. “Otherwise, the first 100 to 200 meters of film will not be usable for the end customers. Originally, we were a little concerned about how they would perform in south east Asia but there has been no problem.” Rollguard’s cradles passed the no-

impressions test impressively and alleviated

pallet supplier who has a special process for that. The Rollguard cradles have eliminated a lot of hassle and logistics problems.”

The first duty of protective roll cradles is to prevent any damage during handling

any doubts about whether they would retain their structural integrity and performance capabilities in moist environments. Even with long-distance shipping, Rollguard’s cradles deliver 40% savings over the wooden blocks. The savings reflect not only the nestability

of the cradles shipped from Rollguard to Belgium and the cost of wood versus molded pulp but also the cost of treating wood that is being used in export. “Normally, the wood cradles would have

to be heat-treated or fumigated before being exported,’ says Timmermans. “So before they arrived here all the wooden supports were first heat-treated and stamped by our

Logistical and cost benefits Using the fiber cradles instead of wooden block has reduced the number of packing material pieces by 50%. A hinge configuration allows each cradle to be folded back on itself to form back-to-back cradles for upper and lower rolls. “We now use a single hinged cradle

instead of two wooden blocks,” says Timmermans. “One piece instead of two is logistically easier. Plus, these are a lot softer than wood so the rolls cannot get damaged so easily. That’s a big advantage.” There are also ‘green’ benefits. “Using cradles that are made from

recycled fiber and are 100% recyclable supports our reputation as a clean, green, healthy company,” concludes Timmermans.“We are working hard to reduce the amount of packaging material we use. We want to become even greener by using recycled and reusable packaging.”

Operator-friendly lift system takes the strain with greatest of ease

Jarshire offers one of the widest ranges of roll, reel and shaft handling equipment and complete systems in the UK. With more than 25 years of experience in this field, the

company has installed systems for reels of 25 kg up to 3000-plus kg. Anyone with air shafts too heavy to handle safely can be

supplied with powered systems to eliminate all manual handling. According to converting division director

David Jobson, one of Jarshire’s important developments this year has been its collaboration with Dotec of the Netherlands. Marketed under the name LiftAssist Dotec’s range includes rotary action roll handlers (horizontal to vertical and reverse) and

single action (horizontal or vertical); both have a capacity of 50-250 kg. There are anti- telescoping solutions for label rolls and mobile rotary action units - the latter designed for use in areas where there is no room for rail or jib cranes.

Ergonomic handle The central feature of the Dotec LiftAssist is the ergonomic handle used to operate it. It can move freely up and down, sliding through the hands, allowing the operator to keep his eye on the load, while a mere finger touch determines both direction and speed. There is no need for bending and stretching when lifting and storing in high places. Each LiftAssist has specific characteristics

based on ease of operating, speed and good posture of the operator. The learning curve is short and it allows operators to work at their own speed according to circumstances. “A Dotec reacts immediately and is part of

the process and for good reason is known as the Friendly LiftAssist," concludes Jobson.”
