LOCAL HEROES


Tom Tivnan sees a little known author called E L James romping over three Anglophone markets, while home grown stories are non-fiction hits


Anyone not employed by the Random House Group might be sick of hearing about E L James (heck, even Random staffers might have E L fatigue), but as in yesterday’s charts we see her set records across three territories. In the UK, James broke what might have seemed an unassailable record: the £42.6m J K Rowling churned out through Nielsen BookScan in 2007 (the highest non-Rowling single year total was Stephenie Meyer’s £28.8m in 2009). At the time of writing, James has shifted £45m worth of books in 2012, and could very well crack £50m by year’s end. Rowling’s adult novel Te Casual


Vacancy does not figure in any of our top 10s, as the Australian chart had to be run before the book’s release. Te US and UK data are from Te Casual Vacancy’s first week of sales. In the UK she sold 124,603 copies in week one through BookScan, in the US 154,720 units. Not too shabby—it is the biggest weekly UK total for an adult fiction hardback in three years, the biggest US adult hardback week since July 2011. Still, it is probably fair to say Little, Brown US and UK were expecting a little more from week one. Non-fiction more often than not


trends toward local issues and that is the case in these three markets. Topping the charts in the US is Mark Owen’s controversial (at least for the Pentagon) first-hand account of the killing Osama bin Laden. In the UK, Jennifer Worth’s Call the Midwife, the first of her memoirs of working in London’s East End in the 1950s, continues to sell strongly. Down Under, the posthumous memoir of Dublin-born Aussie Rules footballer Jim Stynes which focuses on his courageous battle with cancer, tops the charts.
