All the advantages and none of the weird smell: digital textbooks get serious
Richard Stephenson, CEO of YUDU Media By Lucy Driver ( rst posted on the Frankfurt Book Fair Blog)
It is a truth universally acknowledged that maths text books smell weird. Or, it was a truth universally acknowledged in my high school. Text books smelt weird, were boring and out of date and lugging them around in our backpacks probably gave us all life-long posture problems. This is - or was – standard, but digitisation is sweeping the school system, particularly in Thailand, Turkey, Spain, Japan, UK, Russia and many others. It makes sense: if Mum is reading 50 Shades of Grey on her Kindle, why should little Sally be stuck with her maths problems only in print form?
Of course, the print form does have some advantages: it can be highlighted, bookmarked, and scribbled on. But now the digital version can do that as well and YUDU Education has been launched to
do just that. YUDU Media is an established digital solutions provider, publishing online content from 2003, ranging from university prospectuses to brochures to e-books to magazines, with big name clients like Random House, HarperCollins, and CUP. But YUDU Education is brand new, and will be launched at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
It’s YUDU Education that will bring over all those advantages of text over to the digital form. Richard Stephenson, CEO, said:
‘Students working in the classroom may often be accessing textbooks on a Windows PC, and need to bookmark, add notes and clip sections. Those same students will want to use their tablets to continue their studies at home and pick up where they left o . Similarly one school
might issue iPads for the classroom and a student might want to access the content on an Android tablet at home. Our system can cater for those needs.’
