Weidenfeld & Nicolson has whisked rising cookery star Rachel Khoo away from her previous publisher Penguin, signing two new books from the French cuisine specialist. Non-fiction publishing director


Amanda Harris, who also publishes UK cookery stalwarts the Hairy Bikers, has bought world English language rights from Pixie Shields at Marabout, with the first title, Te Little Paris Breakfast, to be released in hardback in September 2013, priced £14.99, and as a £7.99 e-book. Te title will see Khoo, who set up


her own popular restaurant in her tiny (21 sq m) Paris flat, create recipes


RIGHTS IN BRIEF ATLANTIC GRABS TWO OZICKS


Ravi Mirchandani, editor-in-chief at Atlantic, has bought two of Cynthia Ozick’s previous novels, The Messiah of Stockholm and The Puttermesser Papers, after having success with her last book, Foreign Bodies, which was longlisted for the 2012 Orange Prize. The deal was done with David Miller at RCW. Atlantic plans to publish the novels in the UK in summer 2013.


THREE IS A MAGIC NUMBER FOR HODDER


Hodder & Stoughton, who pre- empted world rights in The Three by Sarah Lotz in a high-profile pre-fair deal with Blake Friedmann’s Oli Munson, are quickly selling foreign rights, with rights director Jason Bartholomew reporting “phones have been ringing off the hook from interested foreign editors”. So far, rights in the high-concept novel,


involving four planes crashing simultaneously with mysterious consequences, have been sold in the US to Reagan Arthur Books, to Goldmann in Germany, Hayakawa in Japan, Fleuve Noir in France, Cargo in the Netherlands, Casa Editrice Nord in Italy, and snapped up by Alnari in Serbia.


GUESS WHAT’S NEXT?


Templar has acquired world rights, through its Brubaker, Ford and Friends imprint, in a new picture book from Sam McBratney, author of the bestselling, Guess How Much I Love You? There, There is described as a “soothing and warm-hearted story” about Little Hansie Bear, who gets into all sorts of scrapes. Illustrated by Ivan Bates, it will be published in May 2013.


TWO BOOK DEAL FOR HEADLINE Headline has pre-empted world


rights in The String Diaries and one other novel by Stephen Jones, from Sam Copeland at Rogers, Coleridge & White. Commissioning editor John Wordsworth signed the deal, with the first book described as “a captivating supernatural thriller which follows a historical mystery through to its nail-biting contemporary conclusion”.


RYDER CUP REDUX


Headline has acquired world English language rights in a book chronicling Europe’s recent unexpected victory in the 39th Ryder Cup tournament. Non-fiction publishing director Jonathan Taylor bought world English language rights in the title, Miracle at Medinah: Europe’s Amazing Ryder Cup Comeback, from David Luxton of David Luxton Associates. Mirror chief sports writer Oliver Holt will write the book, to be published in hardback and e-book on 22nd November.

perfect her patisseries skills, and her first book, Te Little Paris Kitchen, was published by Michael Joseph in March 2012 and has sold nearly £1m in the UK this year.


ARROW ACQUIRES SELF-PUBLISHED PROPERTY


Fifty Shades publisher Selina Walker and editor Gillian Holmes at Random House imprint Arrow have snapped up world English language rights in two frontlist novels and two backlist novels by previously self-published author Mary Fitzgerald. Walker and Holmes did the deal with


Teresa Chris, of the Teresa Chris Literary Agency, who is selling translation rights at FBF. Fitzgerald was among the runners-up in Amazon’s 2011 Christmas poll of best indie authors, with many of her books set during or after the Second World War. Walker said: “To read Mary is to fall


in love with her books. She’s a natural storyteller who writes sweeping emotional stories about love and landscape.”
