Erie and DL&W
Wreck Trains by Ron Dukarm Available through the
Erie Lackawanna Historical Society Summerail at CUT
EACH YEAR, the Cincinnati Railroad Club and the Miami Valley Railfans team up to present Summerail at Cincinnati Union Terminal. This beautiful Art Deco former railroad terminal was in danger of being bulldozed after several failed attempts at “adaptive reuse” including a stint as a shopping mall. In 1990 the complex reopened as the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, and it provides the perfect location for a weekend of great railroad-themed slide shows. This year editor Steve Barry and I decid- ed to travel together to Cincinnati. We spent most of Friday, August 10, with local host Willie Davis, past president of the Cincin- nati Railroad Club, who took us on a tour of the busy Norfolk Southern line between Cincinnati and Camden, Ohio, to hunt her- itage units. We saw plenty of trains, but no heritage (unless you count slowly aging widecabs). Friday evening we met with 50 of our closest friends at Camp Washington Chili for our usual pre-Summerail social hour. Then it was over to CUT and a quick visit to Tower A, home of the Cincinnati Railroad Club. Not only is Tower A a great railroad hangout, but it offers some pretty nice views of the action in the Queensgate
Yard complex. Many of the fixtures of Tower A have been left intact, including the mas- sive model board and the dispatchers’ desks. Friday night included some great “infor- mal” slide shows, including Mark Dema- line’s “Chicago in the 1970s by Todd Miller;” Dave Lichtenberg’s “Some Memories of the Past;” Joe McMillan’s “Santa Fe in Arizona;” and Steve Salamon’s “Trains Don’t Run Here Anymore.” The standout show for me was Joe McMillan’s “Santa Fe in Arizona,” which was made richer for me by Joe’s thoughful narration and interesting asides. And if you like the slide show, you’ll love his new book Santa Fe: Canyon Lands and Su- per Chiefs, the fifth volume in his series. Saturday morning we were back at CUT bright and early to sample the railroadiana flea market held in the rotunda. I added more than a few timetables and books to my collection that morning. Outside, classic cars and hot rods were gathering on the sidewalk for a show, and they made for some interesting photo props. After a brief break for lunch we returned in time for the start of the shows. First up for Jerry Pyfer’s “Tales of the Rails: The ICG Era.” Jerry jumped from the declining Milwaukee Road in 1978 to start

This 100 page, five chapter spiral bound book includes 153 photos of Lackawanna, Erie, and EL wreck cranes and their associated equipment. Most of these photographs are being published for the first time. The book also includes 36 drawings and equipment charts. Ron thoroughly covers the complete roster of wrecking cranes, wreck trains, and wrecking procedures of all three railroads. Ron also provides the first ever explanation of Erie's mysterious Maintenance Of Way numbering system.
