NS EMPLOYEES AT THE JUNIATA LOCOMOTIVE SHOP painted freshly overhauled SD60E No. 6920 to the nation’s military veterans, es- pecially those who also serve on the railroad. The unit was dedicated in two ceremonies, first at Juniata on November 8 and then at Lamberts

NEW BILEVELS ARRIVE! Delivery has final- ly begun on the Massachusetts Bay Transit Au- thority’s order for 75 bilevel commuter cars from Korea’s Hyundai-Rotem as the first four cars ar- rived for testing in early November. Ordered in 2008, 47 trailers numbered 800-846 were to have been delivered by the summer of 2012, and 28 cab cars numbered 1800-1827 were to have been finished by the end of the year. The con- stant delays prompted MBTA acting General Manager Jonathan Davis to visit the Hyundai plant in September 2012, when he saw the first 18 carbodies on the factory floor. The trailers are to be delivered beginning early in 2013 with the order completed in the summer of 2014. The body shells will be fitted out at Hyundai-Rotem’s plant in South Philadelphia, Penn.

STATE TAKES OVER CSX TRACKAGE: In October the MBTA purchased 90 route miles of CSX track in eastern Massachusetts, includ- ing 45 miles between Boston and Worcester; 37 miles between Taunton, Fall River, and New Bedford; and the eight-mile Grand Junc- tion branch linking North and South Stations via Cambridge. The T will increase service on the Worcester line by 50 per cent and wants to establish commuter service to New Bedford and Fall River. As part of the deal, CSX relo- cated freight classification, intermodal, and lo-

Point, Va., on November 12. En route to Lamberts Point, it led train 37Q from Enola to Roanoke on November 10 and then took coal train 812 east to Norfolk on November 11, passing Bedford, Va. (above). The colorful EMD is assigned to the general freight pool.

comotive servicing from former the Conrail fa- cilities in the Beacon Park section of Boston to Worcester, Westboro, and West Springfield.

ALSTOM TO REHAB COACHES: Alstom won the $218 million contract to overhaul 74 of the T’s Kawasaki bilevel commuter cars (trail- ers 700-749 and cab cars 1700-1709 and 1711- 1724), along with 86 late 1980s-vintage Green Line Type 7 articulated light rail vehicles. The work will be done at Alstom’s plant in Hornell, N.Y., which will receive the first ten bilevels later this year; the first LRV’s arrived at the plant in October. The first completed cars should be delivered in late 2013.

Ontario Northland

NORTHLANDER MAKES LAST RUN: On- tario Northland’s Northlander passenger train made its last runs between Toronto and Cochrane, Ontario, on September 28, 2012. The train was discontinued as the province sells off the money-losing Ontario Northland Transportation Commission. The Polar Bear Express between Cochrane and remote Moosonee continues to operate, but ONR’s freight operations are up for grabs.

UNION PROPOSES PLAN TO SAVE ONTC: In October the General Chairperson’s Associa- tion, which represents Ontario Northland

Transportation Commission employees, pro- posed that ONTC’s assets, including the On- tario Northland Railway, be transferred to the James Bay & Lowlands Ports Trustee Corp., a new port authority. The plan advocates con- struction of a new rail line to serve mining in- terests in the Ring of Fire region of the James Bay Lowlands in northern Ontario, where de- posits of nickel, copper, platinum, and palladi- um have been discovered just below the surface.

Texas State Railroad

FREIGHT CARRIER IS NAMED: Iowa Pa- cific Holdings took over the Texas State Rail- road operating contract from American Her- itage Railways in August (see C&TS story, previous page), and will provide common car- rier freight service over the 27-mile route be- tween Palestine and Rusk, Texas, under the name Rusk, Palestine & Pacific. RP&P has ob- tained 1.3 miles of trackage rights over Union Pacific in order to reach UP’s Palestine Yard for interchange, which began on November 23. Iowa Pacific made its mark on the TSRR as

it introduced a new, elongated diamond- shaped logo based on the old Texas & Pacific herald. And, 1902 Alco 4-6-0 No. 201 (ex-T&P 316) was the first locomotive to be restored to its historic appearance, making its debut in fresh Texas & Pacific paint and lettering on November 3.
