Jeff Naul takes a moment to look up from working on Wayne Moore’s Balsa USA 1⁄3 scale PT-17 (above left). The plane was powered by a Moki 5-cylinder engine. Whatever Jeff did must have worked because the plane flew to third place in the WWII category. Jimmy Davis did an outstanding job on his ESM Me-

109 powered by a DA-85 engine with Futaba gear (above right). The three- bladed carbon fiber prop is both for display and for flying. It also had specially made Shidin Machine retractable landing gear installed. Unfortunately, the plane suffered some damage on the runway and was not able to fly.

The only helicopter at this year’s “Warbirds over Texas” takes to the air in the hands of David Sweatt. David’s Raptor 50 Titan(above left) has a new painted body shell done up in Marine markings. The model is powered by a modified OS .50 Hyper engine and flew in a most scale-like manner. On the second day of the event, activity is halted at noon and each pilot brings a plane to the center of the runway (above). Spectators and pilots examine the planes and ask questions prior to voting for the award categories. This type of interaction with the public is conducive to the public’s understanding of the hobby/sport and creates a great deal of good will. Smoke wafts from the rocket engine in Dave Schaefer’s Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird(below left) just before it blasts upward almost out of sight before being guided back home in the glide. If you blinked during the ignition sequence, the next time you saw the plane was during its glide back to the runway.
