Lost artistry As a practitioner of CAD and hand-drawn
model airplane design, I believe that we have lost a great deal of beauty and art by our seemingly total conversion to CAD drawings in the published model airplane drawings. You may be interested in reading a like sentiment from a very famous architect, published in The New York Times, Septem- ber 1, 2012. view that there’s a point when too much may be written regarding such an overdone crit- icism of pertinence to errors in the repro- duction of military aircraft. I believe you might be interested in the exchange of let- ters I created as follows: I wrote these sentences in a letter to Mr. Donald Lopez, Deputy Director of the NA&SM dated July 17, 2007: “I have hanging in my room a copy of The
Golden Age of Flight, winner of the First Avi- ation Art competition of 1984. It depicts a two-plane section of F4B-4 aircraft flying over a lea in which some cows are feeding. The painting is titled ‘Scaring the Cows’ and was painted by the noted artist Craig Kodera. “The painting presents the Boeing bi-
planes as being from the Top Hat Squadron known as ‘Fighting One’ in which the

squadron insignia of the ‘Top Hat’ is followed by the number ‘One’ meaning Squadron One, followed by the letter ‘F’ meaning fighter. The leading aircraft shows, correctly, the Top Hat, followed by the number ‘1’ meaning the leader in Section One, or the leader of the entire squadron. The next Boeing shows the Top Hat of Fighting One but with the num- ber ‘2’ which is the squadron number of ‘Fighting Two’ known as the ‘Fighting Chiefs’ which has as its insignia the sleeve rating of a chief petty officer. Following the number ‘2’ is the letter ‘F’ and the plane number is hidden by the lower wing.” Subsequently I received the following let-
ter from Mr. Lopez written on July 26, 2007: “I am sorry that you are upset by the mis-
taken markings on the second F4B-4 in Craig Kodera’s painting ‘Scaring the Cows’. I took a look at it with our in-house author- ity on pre-war Navy markings, who agrees that you are absolutely correct.” Skipping along in his letter he added, “It
seems that the quality of the artwork was more important to them than the accuracy of the markings on the aircraft. Obviously, that should not have been the case in a competition run by the National Air & Space Museum.” I shall continue to both praise and criti-
cize subsequent publications of what I am being praised by a recognized source. If no praise or criticism is to be acknowledged, why should an effort ever be made? Nevertheless, I look forward as always to subsequent issues of FLYING MODELS. ERIC S. EMORY Katonah, NY
