Sign Your School Up for the Fingal Athletics League

The Fingal Athletics League is organised by Fingal County Council’s Sports Office in partnership with Athletics Ireland and is now in its 6th year.

Schools from all over Fingal can choose to enter one of two leagues in Porterstown Park, Dublin 15 or Balheary Park, Swords and can enter a maximum of 50 pupils, boys or girls from 3rd – 6th class with race distances ranging from approximately 250 – 550 metres. There will be three race meets in the respective venues before the Finals Day in May 2013 in Morton Stadium, Santry, which sees both leagues coming together to race at Ireland’s premier athletics facility!

Primary schools in Balbriggan and Baldoyle are invited to get involved in Fingal County Council’s Schools Boxing Programme run by the Council’s Sports Office with support from the Irish Sports Council, Bracken and Baldoyle Boxing Clubs.

The programme aims to introduce boys and girls from 3rd to 6th class to boxing through non-contact, skills based fun activities. Fully qualified IABA coaches from both clubs will complete the 6 week introduction to boxing programme in local schools, followed by a presentation night in each club, giving students and their parents a chance to see what goes on inside a boxing club and to meet all the coaches. This is the third year of the programme in which 450 students from Bracken Educate Together, St. George’s NS, St. Mologa’s SNS and St. Teresa’s NS took part in 2011.

Whitestown Park has two looped routes, 1.3km and 1.5 km in length and is suitable for all levels of walker. The map board for the looped routes is located at the Multi-Use Games Area in the park. This initiative is part of Fingal County Council’s commitment to enhancing public parks and amenities and encouraging people to use them for exercise and for recreation.

If you are over 55 and interested in a new activity, Nordic Walking could be the one for you.

The benefits of this popular activity include toning the upper and lower body simultaneously, using 90% of the skeletal muscles, burning up to 46% more calories than ordinary walking, reducing the pressure on knees and joints and improving cardiovascular fitness.

If you are interested in taking part in an introductory Nordic Walking workshop in Donabate this autumn, contact Caitríona Geraghty, Sports Development Office on 01 890 6247 or email caitriona.geraghty@fingalcoco.ie
