AMA clearly stated in its written report that “starting at age 40, all women should be eligible for screening mammography.”
AMA supports mammography starting at 40
The American Medical Association did not remove support for annual mam- mography starting at age 40 as was reported in Texas Medicine. (“Advocacy, Public Health Issues Dominate AMA Meeting,” August 2012.) I was at the AMA meeting as an alternate delegate. AMA clearly stated in its written report that “starting at age 40, all women should be eligible for screening mam- mography.” The association also clearly stated its support for insurance coverage of mammography screening beginning at age 40.
The mistaken passage in the Texas
Medicine article regarding this AMA ac- tion may add to the confusion already experienced by the women of Texas and their physicians regarding this issue and may place women at risk of dying un- necessarily from breast cancer. An analysis (Hendrick and Helvie), published in the American Journal of Roentgenology, showed that if U.S. Pre- ventive Services Task Force breast can- cer screening guidelines were followed,
approximately 6,500 additional women each year in the United States would die from breast cancer. Every major American medical orga- nization with expertise in breast cancer care, including the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Cancer Society, the American the College of Radiology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the So- ciety of Breast Imaging recommend that women start getting annual mammo- grams at age 40. AMA did not contradict this as was reported.
