Concussion education resources
As young athletes take part in the fall sports season, Texas physicians can par- ticipate in continuing medical education (CME) programs on concussions. Physicians play a critical role in di- agnosing and treating concussions, the brain injuries attracting more and more attention from the sports media and re- search communities. Physicians also are playing a more
prominent role in their local school dis- tricts and communities when it comes to managing concussions. House Bill 2038, passed in 2011, requires school districts to establish concussion management teams that include a physician. Texas Medical Association members can learn more about concussions, in- cluding diagnosis and treatment, from the following resources:
• The Texas Orthopaedic Associa- tion (TOA) has a 2.5-hour webinar, “Sports Related Concussion & Mild TBI: Developments in Treatment & Management.” The online course includes information on identifying suspected concussions, pre- and post- injury assessments, and managing concussions. Participants can earn 2.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM
. TMA
members can register at the Ortho- paedic CME Online site, www.ortho
paediccme.org/index.asp, and receive a discounted one-year subscription to TOA’s online CME course catalog.
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides various resourc- es, including a Heads Up: Brain In- jury in Your Practice toolkit (
