Dr. Janek to head HHSC


Former state Sen. Kyle Janek, MD, be- came executive commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Com- mission on Sept. 1. Gov. Rick Perry ap- pointed Dr. Janek and announced that Chris Traylor, of Austin, will be chief deputy commissioner. “Texas, like the rest of the country, is headed into a period of the most signifi- cant changes in health care in our his- tory,” Governor Perry said. “This new leadership team, with Kyle and Chris at the helm, combines unparalleled expe- rience and expertise to ensure Texans continue to have access to the health care they need while implementing fis- cal policies that are mindful it’s taxpayer money they are spending.” Dr. Janek is a board-certified anes-


thesiologist and director of anesthesia services at Lakeway Regional Medical Center near Austin. He served in the Texas House of Representatives and Sen- ate from 1995 to 2008. He replaces Tom Suehs, who is retiring. Mr. Traylor has been commissioner of


the Texas Department of Aging and Dis- ability Services since 2010.


Charles Dryden, MD: 1920–2012


Former TMA President Charles B. Dryden, MD, died Aug 8 in Wichita Falls. He was 91. A urologist, Dr. Dryden served as the association’s president in 1973–74. Ac- cording to his obituary in the Wichita Falls Times Record News, Dr. Dryden once replied, “just that I worked in medicine,” when asked how he would like to be re- membered professionally. Dr. Dryden graduated from South- western Medical College in Dallas, now The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, in 1945. Texas Medicine reported in 1973 that Dr. Dryden is be- lieved to be the first Southwestern grad- uate to become TMA president. He served in the U.S. Army Medical


Corps from 1946 to 1948 and attained the rank of captain.
