The pumping revolution starts here

sounds a bit grand but actually it’s not far from the truth. As a result of changes

happening under the ErP Directive – handed down from the EU to all 27 members states to comply with – from 1 January 2013, things will be changing massively in the world of pumps.

The UK Government has set out very ambitious targets for energy and carbon reduction and it is looking for significant help from the heating and hot water and air conditioning sectors to achieve these. Many elderly, old technology pumps will not be available as an option for specifiers and contractors after 1 January

2013. The important new yardstick for determining which pump models can continue to be used in future is referred to as the energy efficiency index (EEI).

The authorities have recognised the need for high-efficiency solutions, issuing strict guidelines for energy consumption. The new far-reaching ErP directive for ‘energy related products’ applies to all glanded pumps used for heating and air-conditioning, water supply, pressure boosting and sewage disposal. As of 2011, the ErP directive began to set increasingly stringent efficiency limit values for electric motors – changes that have already begun to radically change the pump market for ever.

In reaction to this and in view of the gigantic potential for saving energy, Wilo has developed a pioneering solution. It’s a brand new motor principle for glanded pumps, which achieves levels of efficiency far in excess of the defined limit values. Using this principle, the new Wilo GIGA already more than meets the legal requirements that will not come into effect until 2017. And that’s not all – it also beats the IE4 limit values. This means secure planning for building designers and architects for years to come with great, as yet unlocked potential

for reducing costs and emissions.

The figures associated with the new Wilo- Stratos GIGA are quite staggering. Specifying the GIGA for projects will result in a saving of emissions amounting to approximately 8,000 kg CO2 per year as well as saving up to £70,000 in electricity costs per pump installed over a 15 year lifecycle, compared to conventional uncontrolled pumps (based on the Blue Angel load profile).

The new GIGA has a typical payback period of less than two years, which highlights the benefits and value of installing high efficiency Wilo pumps. GIGA pumps can claim particularly high total efficiency based on a motor efficiency of up to 94% at a nominal motor power of 4.5kW. The potential for savings using these new pumps is staggering and when you consider that 85% of the lifecycle costs of a pump are the energy costs, being able to save up to 70% of those just by using a Wilo- Stratos GIGA is a very appealing argument for looking very closely at what Wilo has to offer.

Another risk for owners of vacant property is empty business rates liability, depreciation and a social responsibility to put the building back into use.
