PA PROFILE

VIEW FROM MY DESK

Caroline D’Souza, Assistant to the Head of Visitor Services and Security at The National Gallery

What is the skill you use most at work? It has to be communication; both verbal and written. I come into contact with staff across the gallery, contractors and consultants for a variety of reasons and assist them with their enquiries.

What’s the best and worst part of your role? It is a privilege to work in such a beautiful environment with the paintings and colleagues from all over the world. There is no negative aspect to my role.

What’s in your top drawer? Emergency supplies: pens, pencils, sellotape, shorthand notebooks and some paperwork.

What do you see for the future of the PA? I have great expectations –more involvement in business strategy, projects and budgets.

ADVICE

Make exhibitions work for you

Exhibition season is once again upon us and so we’ve gathered together some of the experts’ top tips to get the most out of attending this year’s shows:

“Take advantage of any new technology demonstrations and giveaways that could potentially help you to do your job more effectively and stay ahead of the game!” Paul Robin, Event Director, Business Travel Market

“Plan your time at the event by pre- booking or putting together a wish list of seminars to attend. Many events now offer a free ‘plan your day’ app so take advantage and use one to put together a schedule.” David Maguire, Senior Sales Executive, office*

“We all know and understand that time away from the office is precious these days, so planning in advance – be that travel tickets or directions to the venue – is vital to ensure you maximise your time effectively.” Paul Robin, Event Director, Business Travel Market

“Most events have online social networks enabling you to network pre-event. They’re a great way to meet fellow

attendees and arrange appointments at the show.” David Maguire, Senior Sales Executive, office*

“Research who is going to be at the event and make sure you reach out to them in advance to let them know you’ll be there – make the most of online booking systems for pre-arranging qualified meetings at the event as this is the best way of making sure you spend your time with businesses who can really add value to yours.” Paul Robin, Event Director, Business Travel Market
